First off, thanks for serving our country -

That pay ain't all bad, considering you get your housing, food, clothing, medical and dental expenses paid for.

My base pay, when I first went on active duty, was $2,600 per year.

You will do OK, I suggest you put your 20 years in, then "retire" to a civilian career.

In the 70s mine was $33 a day as a E5 (equivalent). Of that $33 they took back $3 a day for "accommodations and messing" and another $1 a day for "miscellaneous dues" of which nobody could ever tell me exactly what they were for.

Speaking of miscellaneous expense costs in the Army, reminds me of "payday" back in the old Army. We paid in cash. Donations to whatever charity were solicited (collected) at payday. I mentioned to my First Sergeant that it would be good to have a high participation among the troops.

After each payday, he would say to me "sir, we got 100% participation again". I was curious as to how he did that. So, one payday, I watched. He positioned himself at the next table to the pay officer, with a sign asking for donations AND a blank duty roster board.

You 36 yet? I assume you live on base. Can't be that bad, then.

This is the kind of thing that would make me never join the military. I don't respond well to coercion. Duty I'm good with.
