Toyota Debuts GT86 CS-R3 Customer Rally Car at ADAC Rallye Deutschland

Quote:
Toyota’s new GT-86 CS-R3 rally car will enter its first event in August at the ninth round of this year’s FIA World Rally Championship, the ADAC Rallye Deutschland.

Developed by Toyota Motorsport (TMG), the RWD rally version of the GT-86 marks the company’s return to rallying roots, reminding of the Celica TA64 Twin-cam Turbo of the 1980s.

Following its debut in Germany, the GT86 CS-R3 rally car will be available as a “cost-effective competition model for private customers participating at all levels of the sport,” according to Toyota.

The GT86 CS-R3 will not actually compete in the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, but will be put through its paces as the official “pathfinder” zero car, driven through each stage as a safety test immediately ahead of the field.

The car will be driven by Isolde Holderied, a double women’s world rally champion, who will evaluate the GT86 CS-R3’s performance so that final adjustments can be made to its design prior to homologation to international R3 competition criteria.

During development, TMG says it focused on reducing weight and ensuring safety, reliability and fun. And as the FIA R3 class allows modifications to be made to the two-liter boxer engine, Toyota has increased its output to between 240 and 250 hp thanks to changes to the software and to physical elements such as the cam-lift and compression ratio.

The engine is linked to a sequential shift six-speed transmission and a limited-slip rear differential. The car also features a weight-optimized safety cage, designed to FIA requirements, as well as tailor-made wiring looms, motorsport engine ECUs, tarmac and gravel suspension kits. The first customer cars will be available in kit form during the first quarter of 2015, at a similar price to other R3 cars.

TOYOTA Motorsport GmbH (TMG) is pleased to report positive progress on its GT86 CS-R3 rear-wheel-drive rally car, with the first prototype entering final assembly prior to its first test.

TMG engineers have been working hard since October 2013 to develop the CS-R3 concept as a clean-sheet design.

Group A homologation has been confirmed for the base car and the FIA R3 homologation process will begin shortly, after the final specification has been validated on the test track.

TMG’s engine design and development department has analysed the original two-litre boxer engine and is completing an upgrade programme intended to improve on the 200hp maximum power.

With the support of its supplier, TMG has also prepared a sequential shift, six-speed gearbox for the GT86 CS-R3. This, along with limited-slip differential and modified brakes, will be installed on the test prototype in the coming days.

An FIA-homologated safety cage has been specially designed and calculated, allowing weight optimisation, and this has been successfully installed.

TMG has also sourced tailor-made wiring looms and motorsport engine ECUs, while a market-leading supplier is used to supply tarmac and gravel suspension kits, including specially-designed arms.

Final assembly of the car will be completed shortly and its first tests are planned this month. The car remains on schedule for a public launch in the second half of August.

The GT86 CS-R3 will be available to customers in the first quarter of 2015 in kit form while TMG will evaluate the supplying of built-up cars. Exact pricing has not yet been confirmed but TMG expects to deliver a competitive price compared to other R3 models.

Nico Ehlert, Principal Engineer Customer Motorsport: “It’s very satisfying to see the GT86 CS-R3 taking shape and it is exciting to think it will be on the test track in just a few days. We have been working hard to reach this stage, with a lot of effort going into the preparation and planning to make sure we deliver a reliable and enjoyable car to customers from the beginning. Our engineer focus has been to develop a lightweight car which is safe, reliable and fun. So far everything is running on schedule and we are hitting our targets; we look forward to continuing that progress through the track-testing phase.”

The article in the OP says "software updates" but the Top Gear article says "tailor made wiring looms and motorsport ECUs" which sounds like a bit more than software updates to a stock ECU.

I would think that if the public had access to the elusive FA-20 cams, no emission concerns, access to 100 octane fuel, and custom complete straight through exhaust then getting 240HP out of a NA FA-20 would not be that big a deal. Making it live a long life on the other hand.............

Full press release from Toyota

Quote:
NEW TOYOTA GT86 CS-R3 RALLY CAR TO MAKE WORLD RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP DEBUT

Toyota's new GT86 CS-R3 rally car will make its public debut next month on the ADAC Rallye Deutschland, ninth round of this year's FIA World Rally Championship. Engineered by Toyota Motorsport (TMG), this competition version of the multi-award-winning coupe marks a return to Toyota's rallying roots with rear-wheel drive performance that echoes the winning pedigree of the Celica TA64 Twin-cam Turbo of the 1980s.

The decision to develop the rally car amplifies Toyota's global theme of "fun to drive, again" and its encouragement of grass-roots motorsport. Although the prototype CS-R3 is breaking cover at a high-profile WRC event, the finished car will be available as a cost-effective competition model for private customers participating at all levels of the sport.

The CS-R3, in development for the past year, will be not be competing in Rallye Deutschland, but will be put through its paces as the official "pathfinder" zero car, driven through each stage as a safety test immediately ahead of the field.

Isolde Holderied, a double women's world rally champion, will be driving the CS-R3 and an important part of her job will be to evaluate its performance so that final adjustments can be made to its design prior to homologation to international R3 competition criteria.

TMG's extensive development programme has focused on reducing weight and ensuring safety, reliability and fun. The FIA R3 class allows modifications to be made to the two-litre boxer engine; changes to the software and to physical elements such as the cam-lift and compression ratio are expected to increase the unit's output to between 240 and 250bhp.

The CS-R3 also benefits from a sequential shift six-speed transmission and a limited-slip rear differential, together with a weight-optimised safety cage, designed to FIA requirements.

TMG has sourced tailor-made wiring looms and motorsport engine ECUs, and market-leading Tarmac and gravel suspension kits have been developed.

The CS-R3 has been tested on different surfaces in readiness for Rallye Deutschland, which will cover 170 miles over 18 stages from 21 to 24 August.

The first customer cars will be available in kit form during the first quarter of 2015, with prices expected to be comparable with other R3 cars. Prices will be announced following confirmation of final specifications.

Nico Ehlert, TMG Principal Engineer – Customer Motorsport, said: "It's important to say that the GT86 CS-R3 which Isolde will drive is not the finished article; we need the data from Rallye Deutschland to finalise our development programme. But it does represent a significant step in the GT86 CS-R3 story and gives a clear indication to our future customers that this project is progressing quickly.

"The fact we are testing our prototype on a very public stage, the FIA World Rally Championship, shows what confidence we have in this project. Interest in this car has already exceeded our expectations and we are looking forward to customer and fan feedback from the rally."
