How long did it take you to get in? I've been waiting for months for them to take my car in (they said they are going down the list on a first come first serve)

What is the consequences about the recall? I have been looking at buying a BRZ that has an open valve spring recall. Would it be a bad idea to buy one with an open recall like that?

Not unless you're in Calif. Then, you have a choice to get it done or not.

My FR-S was running great so I hate having to do the J02 recall, but CA is forcing my hand. Reluctantly brought my perfectly running car to Autonation Toyota Irvine to tear the engine apart.

Good news is the dealership has been great. No wait list and I was able to bring the car in immediately. They said they can replace spark plugs for just cost of parts while the engine's out. Free rental. They said only the master tech will perform the work (one of two at the dealership, and he's got 30+ yrs experience). They've done ~20 recalls so far and none have come back with any issues.

So fingers crossed.

In other news, has anyone driven a Corolla lately? It might actually have more road noise at 70 mph than my FR-S on track tires. Man is it loud on the highway. Also why is the steering column slanted? Apparently the designers think that people's right arms are shorter than their left. Surprisingly decent engine/transmission combo though.

Update - Got the car back. Pretty quick turnaround, about 2 days. So far it's running smoothly with no engine lights. Nothing to report really except a strong coolant smell, but I'm sure that'll burn off quickly.

They said the TOB was on its way out, but wanted $200 to replace it so I passed. I've got an Exedy stage 1 clutch with LFW ready to go in, so I'll replace the TOB then and throw in a stronger clutch fork.

I'll post an update after 1000 miles but so far so good.

What does the proof of recall performed certificate that you have to send to the DMV look like from the Subaru dealer? Anyone got a photo of one?

I dont have a picture, but you do not send proof to the DMV. The dealer performing the recall sends the certificate to the DMV. It is advised you get a physical copy for your own records, but you have to request it from the dealership.

Has anyone received a waiver on this recall? SoA referred me to corporate, corporate referred me to NHTSA. I don't want them cracking open my motor after all the work that has been done just to replace it with inferior parts and potentially questionable labor...

I'm curious about this as well - what if you have aftermarket valve springs already installed?

Yes, as I have done. They're saying that I absolutely have to do this. As in, if you don't do this, you can never drive your car, or register it (legally) on the roads ever again. That's why I'm wondering if anybody has gotten a waiver. I've never considered litigation but this seems like something they shouldn't be able to do, just bar me from ever registering or driving this car again unless I do this.

I wonder if there is any way to show NHTSA the disaster this recall is causing and have them reconsider enforcing it...

It's only a disaster for a very small percentage of the cars impacted, it's all "user error" so no, they probably would not.
