with my first twin on stock tires, I made it from AZ to ID with decent snow about halfway through the trip. admittedly not heavy snow but it was enough snow to cause me to lose control and start drifting for a few seconds on the highway which was pretty scary but hey the computer nannies/abs rescued me and my 3 passenger safely made it to Boise lol

That still seems hard to believe. If he had the whole back end up, snapping a lug on one side wouldn't generate any real force on the other side.

If he didn't have the whole back end up, snapping all the remaining lugs on the driver's rear would drop the car to the ground with the tire in the wheel well, wouldn't it? IE body damage and possibly rotor damage as well.

Not saying it didn't happen. It just seems like at that point the cost of the lugs would be the least of my worries (and a minor point in the whole story).

I'm guessing you're not 6'4". There's about 1" of leg room behind my seat in an 86 - if that much. It's a nicely upholstered shelf with a seatbelt.

How much he spent, he should of went widebody. It wasn't cheap (he claims).

Either way, good thing he didn't. Cuz next year, got rear ended and totaled. Now he have IS.

Its a decent/passable 4 passenger car for shorter folks. Im 5'-7" and can sit behind myself in a semi-comfortable driving position so i would imagine 5'-8" is probably the tallest someone should be in order to fit 4 people in this car without subjecting the back seat passengers to some kind of leg amputation torture.

taller folks either have to be legless or know some kind of contortionist/yoga positions to sit in the back seat.

And i wouldnt try driving this car in any kind of winter conditions on OEM tires. The OEM tires are summer only and they'll barely have any grip if at all once the temps get cold.

Kansas is pretty flat, so around here snowy conditions are pretty tame. Most people who get into trouble are either those brilliant fools who think the AWD on the back of their soccer-mom crossover means they can still go 75mph on a 60mph highway despite packed snow and black ice, or the people who don't give themselves more room to stop and do a pre-stop brake test. Like if you're coming up on a stop sign, push the brakes a little to see if you have any grip, well in advance of where you're going to NEED that grip to actually stop.

I actually like driving my truck in the winter more than I do in the summer for two simple reasons. First, the heater in it will absolutely bake you to death if you crank it. Love it. Second, the truck is MUCH more maneuverable if I can "steer" with the rear tires. It's a 2.2L I4, so it's not like it has much power, but it gets good mileage and I have a 5 speed manual in it so I can put the power it has down pretty precisely.

So it sounds like the 86 would be a handful with the stock tires on it, but something I could keep in line if I'm alert. Smarter move would be some all-season tires at least for winter. But since the truck can collect dents without worry (so long as I don't bend the frame or the wheels I'm not worried) it'll still be the preferred foul-weather driver.
In anything below 40 degrees the summer tires can be treacherous no matter if there is snow or not. There is no "I will be fine if I pay attention" about it and these should not be used where even mildly low temperatures can be expected..
In anything much below freezing the all season tire start to be iffy. Not bad but can take you by surprise. They suck with any amount of snow though and should be called Three Seasons not All. They would be the minimum I would even consider driving on in Kansas sort of conditions.
Anyplace that gets real cold and snow then proper winter tires are a must. These cars can be a tank in the snow with decent winter tires. Still no AWD with equivalent tires but really no issue.

We should bring back the sideways jump seats. Just put one seat in the back

I haven't tried it (and probably never will) but I'm pretty confident that my legs won't fit back there with the seat all the way forward no matter how I try to fold myself up.

And if they did, I'd probably have to be hunched over due to a lack of headroom. (In the driver's seat, properly-adjusted, I can put my hand flat on top of my head and have mild pressure applied to the headliner of the car.)

I like a car that fits like a nice jacket, though.

Re: "Snow Mode"

Only applies to the automatic transmission option.
It skips 1st gear and starts out in 2nd to lower initial torque that makes it less likely to spin the wheels.

Manual transmission models don't have the "Snow Mode" button installed. Only an empty space on the switch plate.
You can get the same effect by starting in 2nd gear.

Using the stock tire widths (M/T and A/T) there isn't enough clearance around the tires to use snow chains.
Some have reported that fabric tire socks can be used for a short distance before they wear out and start flapping around.

Other:

I've had my FR-S since '13 when I bought it new. Now it's slightly over 87k miles.
Nothing has broken ... yet.
Original throw out bearing and spark plug coils have served well so far.
No oil leaks. Booyah!

It's been a nice handling small car that I prefer to drive at a reasonable rate on back roads rather than freeways.

And here are my impressions from driving in 4" of snow, on top of 1" of ice, on Primacy tires that day.
