However, dealers get paid for warranty work. It's usually a predetermined amount based on the parts and expected labor costs (basically book labor) and is at a predetermined rate, not the dealer's standard rate.

As confirmation, when I had my "cricket fix" under warranty I saw the dealer invoice that was going to Toyota including both parts and labor.

Dealers are independently owned, not owned by the manufacturer. I couldn't imagine a scenario where they would agree to do this work for free.
Well, he may have meant that they are not being paid by the customer. Not sure what difference it makes since they are being compensated regardless. I'm sure the techs are paid their normal rate, but the government may compensate the dealership less than they would otherwise receive if they were doing the work under a regular service ticket.

I assume you meant the manufacturer and not the government as the government doesn't cover manufacturer recalls.

As far as compensation, many techs work as "independent contractors" with the dealership and are paid rates based on either the "book rate" for a repair or other agreement. If the manufacturer sets an hourly rate for the work, that is likely what the tech will be paid based on, which could be less than a retail customer rate.

I'm basing this off some limited experience as I have family members who are in the "dealership" business but it could obviously vary.

Yep, that sounds much more accurate than what I said.

I do not have it listed as a routine maintenance in my Toyota service coupon book. I will write it in. "Cleanliness is next to godliness"

Thats what I ment, I should have clarified that better.
its free for the customer, the dealer is compensated for around 12 to 13,5 hours.

I have the recall maintenance manual so I can check if you guys would like.

I dread this recall as my car is also affected.
Currently on 197K Kilometers (122K miles) and it drives like a dream, no issues at all, no oil leaks, nothing..

I'm afraid that once the work is done something will be wrong

This isn't mandatory, you can choose to not have the work performed. I share this fear as well, and may opt to disregard the notice. On the other hand, dealer work should be dealer insured, right?

depends if you have everything documented. if it worked before and suddenly it does not... its your word against theirs right?

When I will get this done I want to have it on record that the dealer agrees that everything is currently fine, get them to sign a document of agreeing that its not leaking, take them for a test drive, etc etc.

If the car does start to have issues I will at least have something to fall back on..... if they agree to my terms that is

Oh, if I had 122,000 miles on mine and it ran perfectly, I would be tempted to pass on the valve spring recall. Hell, I may pass on it with 25,000 miles on my car -

I've got 78k miles on mine and I'm about to install the Edelbrock SC. I'm more worried that the dealer techs won't do a good job and the engine will grenade after the SC goes on, and it will be my problem then.

The car runs great right now, no odd noises or issues. If it DOES blow up and I didn't do the recall, well at least I can build the block and turn up the boost... lol.

How does this affect blown engines...?

Any thoughts on how Toyota will treat me? My stock engine grenaded at around 80k and now I have a refurbished engine installed by a dealership for approx 10k out of my own pocket because Toyota refused to provided assistance (they never said why) but presumably because I was past warranty. As mentioned here this problem is not simply worse case scenario the engine stalls...

Would depend on if the replacement engine falls within the recall - by VIN number.
If not a VIN recall, you should be in the clear. For that problem, anyway.

The first go around my VIN was not part of the recall.

Then the recall check sites went down and didn't work.

The recall sites are back up and now IT IS part of the recall.

So yeah, just a heads up for everyone to check again, even if it said you're not affected the first time.
