SBD Question....

Looking at boosting my 86. I am on a budget as of now but want to get I to the boost life.

I’ve done a lot of research and I think I might go with the SBD 500x kit. I wanted to know some other users opinions on this kit. Also I was curious on what else I would need to buy in addition to this kit?

My goals for now are just 300whp on pump gas. Eventually I want to build the motor and get to around 400-450 with e85 and flex fuel kit etc.

So with the SBD kit what extras will I need to buy?

Oil catch can?
Fuel pump & injectors?
Upgraded Clutch and Clutch Fork?
Electronic boost controller?
Open flash tablet?

I would like to be able to run different amounts of PSI so this is an area I need to do more research in...like maybe have 7 psi and also an 10psi since this is my daily driver and the block is stock for now. Also this is my only vehicle for transportation.

I know there are threads on a lot of this and I have spent months reading them but sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming so I figured I would just ask my own questions.

Thanks for the help in advance

I’m not familiar with boost brands aside from adidas, but I would suggest going a reputable one. I suggest you save a bit longer and go for a higher brand/quality one. Boosting is a major mod so you want a high quality one. Just my .02

Join sbd face book group. Tons of info. I don’t see many issues from users and sbd responds quickly and stands behind the product. I’m considering this kit myself

not to sound mean, but if you have to ask those questions you might be better off with smaller goals.

No way to say this without sounding like a **** but I am going to say it anyway and hope you understand the spirit in which it is said. Please do not read as condescending, angry or even disapproving even though it may read that way.

I agree with Fan that you are not really ready to go to this level yet. It took 10 pages of people helping for you to manage the clutch adjustment and going turbo is far, far more of a challenge.

Why do you want 300HP anyway? What purpose are you going to put that power to in a street car? Have your driving skills outpaced the current abilities of the car? What is wrong with 225 or 250? To go to 400 or 450 on anything but a dedicated race car is just plain silly since you are tripling the current WHP.
You say you have done lots of research yet ask what you need to buy when many of the requirements are clearly stated in the product info.
"The SBD Turbo Kit will safely allow you to add 125+ HP on the 100% factory fuel system."
"An upgraded clutch is mandatory for the manual transmission cars."
"You must have an Ecutek or Open Flash Tablet to tune your vehicle when purchasing this kit. If you do not already have one of the two options, you’ll need to purchase one with your turbo kit."

Have you even considered exhaust?
"On 91/93 octane @ 10 PSI, you can expect 300-325 whp depending on exhaust modifications elected."

I have no clue how this kit is and can't directly comment but it does seem to be rather on the cheap side. You will also need to budget for all the supporting mods and installation if you can't it yourself. Cars running 300+ generally need about an $8,000 to $10,000 budget to be done right (yes I know people have doe it cheaper but that doesn't always work out well). If you are on a tight budget you may be better off waiting until you save up enough to do a quality job.

Can you do repairs when something goes wrong? Can you afford to not be able to drive the car for weeks? Will your budget be destroyed if you have catastrophic failure due to accidental over boost or turbo failure? If you said no to any of those you need to think about this very carefully.

I think your other idea of getting a header, tune and flex fuel is a much better step at this point. Go that route and save for a while and if you still feel you want 300+ down the road you already have the tune ability and the flex fuel option.

Save your money and buy a faster car.
What you'll spend on super charging/turbo your car, you can buy a car with more horsepower. If $$$$ was not a issue then by all means go all in.
Just my 2 cents

As Tcoat said, buy a header & tune...

Well now, Swoldier86, I'm gonna agree with somewhere between @fatoni and @Tcoat, although they both are saying about the same thing.

I have the "feeling" that you might be best off to go to a local shop, that has experience modifying this platform and ask them for some estimates as to how much they would charge to modify and tune your machine, with various options.

Now, I'm not against learning how to do your own work, but this engine and forced induction may not be the best starting point.

This tells me you shouldnt do it. Boosting as your only car doesnt seem like a good idea unless you have the funds to get it immediately fixed or get a long term rental.

Also if the other threads are overwhelming when doing something as major as FI I would venture this is a bit over your head. Ive been down that road and had a car ait in my garage for 15yrs because of it. Not just talking out my ass on this one

My Car is all stock except for wheels and and OFT tune. When i run the car on e85 the increase in power is the perfect amount. I would honostly suggest trying this first. You only need to buy the OFT tablet for this.

I tried very hard to indicate I was not slamming him at all.
He has a base level of knowledge, a tight budget and just isn't ready for this leap. Since he is a decent guy (or appears to be in his other threads) I offered some thinking points to him. That is not a slam and he can take them or leave them as he wishes.

In fact in a reread I don't see anybody slamming him at all.

Now, if he had been a jerk in those other threads ...

Go a reputable kit and make sure you have an oil cooler.
