I get what you are saying, but to be fair in the past Automotive News has been a pretty reputable source.

For example: The Lexus RX300 was released in 1998. But work already began on the 2nd gen RX that same year. As as we all know the 2nd gen RX was released in 2004. Development on the 3rd generation RX also began that same year in 2004. Another example is the BMW 5 Series. The current F10 has been on the market since 2010. But 3 years later we are already seeing BMW testing the next 5 Series last year. Usually work on a new model can take anywhere from 3-5 years to develop. |

The 86 platform isn't incredibly expensive or fancy either, it's just a chopped up Impreza. If anything, producing a second gen is going to be even cheaper for Subaru since they are switching to an all new modular platform for the next gen Impreza/Forester/WRX/Crosstrek that can be used on this as well.
I really don't see Toyota stopping their funding either, especially since it's the only relatively entertaining car in their entire lineup and the new Supra is going to be at a price point several times that of the 86. |

From a technical design standpoint, I'm sure they are working on 2nd and 3rd gen models now but keeping them under wraps because that process takes 2-5 years. I doubt they will release a new generation so soon after the initial release, rather i expect they are probably about ready to release a mid model refresher (IE: drop top, turbo version, or an extended 4 door) without any real changes to the base car. That's not to say a new generation isn't entirely out of the question. It all depends on how the OEMs think the return on investment will pan out.
Additionally, after the tens of millions that Toyota and Subaru spent on R&D, there is no way they are going to just cut the vehicle line without getting a sufficient return on investment... unless the car was a total flop, which I'm pretty sure, it wasn't. (with regards to the Toyota BMW comment. rumors of which, i have also heard) |

If we look to the past, more recent Toyota sports cars usually have a long life cycle.

nahhhh, it will be another 3 years before they update into real 2nd gen & it will come with 3D enhancement!
PS: and it will follow true Subaru fashion 2nd year model (4 years from now) will also receive a free wide body upgrade. |

3 years might be a good time as I will be able to sell mine before the next gen comes out or trade up to one.
I really don't want them to release a turbo version before I want to sell mine as it will kill the value of the first gen models. "Is it the turbo version?" "No." "Oh... not interested." |

If the current model has a 6-8 year life cycle than expect the 2nd gen to be release around 2018-2020.

Subaru is one of a few automakers that does weirdest shiet. They refreshed WRX every 2 years in the GD generation, GR refreshed after 2 years with the last refresh last 3 years. I think we will see BRZ getting several nip and tuck before they release a new gen.

there will probably just be a face lifted kouki model. engine may see a few tweaks, but i don't think they'd change much of the current formula.
