2017 86 "broken" valve spring

I bought my 86 in May of 2017. I've put 18k miles on it and at least 200 autox runs. Zero track days and only driven on weekends and to events. The car is full DS trim (only "power" mods are Nameless axle-back and K&N drop in). In November it developed a rough idle and eventually threw a code (don't remember the code), but the misfire was in cylinder 4. It wouldn't let me turn off tc or use my cruise. I took it to the dealership and they've had it since Nov. 18th. They said the injector was bad, it was replaced after waiting on parts and no resolution. They now say its a broken valve spring. Has anybody else heard of this on the newer cars? Should i consider getting rid of the car, i like it but i don't want to have issues every 18k miles.

PS I went to another dealership first and they said the valves needed adjusted and needed a re-tune. There was only one master tech there. He said it would take him a few months and he recommended a different dealer.

I haven't heard of the issue in the newer model years.

For what it's worth, when I went FI I had a problem.

No rough idle but High Fuel Trims, threw a code, didn't let me use cruise or tc like you described. Turned out I had a vacuum leak. Patched it up and no problems since.

I would look into lemon laws in your state maybe.

These cars are prone to coil packs going bad causing misfires (typically pre-2015 though), particularly cylinder 4. Try replacing that and see what happens.

What do they have that is leading them to think its a valve spring failure? I seem to remember there was some issues with something in the head on the 17s, you may need to look at some other posts on here for 17s with engine failures.

I have been tracking and doing auto-x on my 2013 since 2014. Rev Limiter is above stock, never had an issue with the valve springs.

So.. is the dealer fixing it? Should be warranty unless they have evidence of abuse (overrev, etc).

Do you know why only cylinder 4's coil pack failure is common for pre-'15 cars? The coil pack part number's are all the same, I sure.

I'm asking cause that's happening to me right now lol.

I can’t remember where I saw it, but I believe there is a TSB for certain VIN range 2017 models regarding valve adjustment. That may be something to research to see if it applies to your case.

This.

There are multiple threads on newer cars that have valve adjustment out of spec. Same symptoms.

Where was the vacuum leak? Just curious...

Turned out to be the PCV valve. I had replaced it with the STI one but there isn't enough room for a wrench/socket in there to maneuver in.

Also in the earlier year cars, the evap hoses aren't clamped under the intake manifold so when I was diagnosing my leak I clamped those down as well. They blow off when you go FI.

I had the same leak bro , my PCv just snapped in two and I wasn’t able to redline the car . Got that fixed and we good to go now .

In regards to the post , is the car under warranty still ? If so I would have the dealer who said it needed valve adjustment and time done print out that note from the dealer and then find the nearest biggest city near you with a dealership who has the most recalls done under their belt as a dealer and perhaps try there .
Lastly , I have 13 Brz and when I had issues with redline vacuum leak ect I changed the ignition coils aswell due to it saying I had a misfire in cylinder 3 after a particular delicious tune . My Brz has about 74,000 miles when it started saying misfire On cylinder 3 . After the pcv valve and coils were changed no more misfire , but I digress ....
Find a dealer to look at it perhaps don’t tell them anything just symptoms and see what they say ?

What year is your car? Pre 2015's had three different updates to the coil packs (all 3 have different part numbers) in 2015 they went to a 4th style and an updated engine harness & connector. You have multiple options to "fix" this depending on what year the vehicle is.

Looks like his is a 2014 FRS AT based on his profile.

The dealer is fixing it under warranty. They said Toyota came in and looked it over and said it was a broken valve spring
