TRD forged wheels gunmetal wheels - VIN locked purchase?

Are the PTR2018160GR TRD forged wheels part of a special edition model?

I was looking into getting a set of PTR2018160BK wheels along with a dealership purchase until I started reading issues with this particular model's finish peeling. Found that there was the exact same wheel design but different color and lists cheaper MSRP on the USA part's site. However, when I contacted the parts manager at the dealership, they said the part # was VIN locked and he cannot access any price or information unless he enters the VIN of the vehicle from the edition that this wheel came with from the factory.

I'm up in Canada and have not been able to search up any special editions that came standard with these wheels. I'd imagine the black ones would be VIN locked to the RS 2.0 owners but as far as I can tell, the gunmetal ones were a dealership optional add-on at the time of purchase

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

try a different dealer.

a scion/toyota dealer tried giving me a headache like that over a few bolts that i had the part numbers for(me having a brz, they're incompatible!!!). i walked out, called another toyota dealer a few blocks away to check stock, and picked them up 15 minutes later.

In the US the gunmetal are available to anyone thru the parts department at Toyota dealership, a bit pricey though.
They are a factory accessory part here, dealers put em on the cars when they order from the factory, no special edition.

Not sure how they handle these up north in Canada though..

Yeah that was a bit wierd. The only thing is this is the dealership i will be picking up my 86 from in a few weeks. Was going to get a set of the black ones (ironically the black ones are actually part of the limited edition rs 2.0 fr-s and not locked behind a VIN) for a small discount along with the car. However I recently stumbled upon some threads reporting the black ones' mirror finish has a tendency to peel so was hoping i was able to get the gunmetal ones instead. The gunmetal one according to the USA parts website works out to be cheaper too so that's a bonus

The parts manager said he can't even look up the price of give me any information on what particular exclusive model the wheels were part of. Said the computer won't let him pull up any info on the part number without a VIN. Not sure if it's BS or what.

still call around. there's no way to know if they're just jerking you around until you do. if you find another dealer that can get them, bring it up to your salesperson. it would even be better if you found multiple other dealers that could get them for you.

but the important thing is to not try to make them look like fools over the entire thing. if other dealers can get the wheels you want, explain what the other dealers can do, and give them a chance to correct it. if they still don't want to budge, then start talking about discounting the wheels that come on the car, or walk away from the deal.

I did explain to him the peeling of the black wheels and inquired about warranty. He says the wheels are covered from defects for 1 year after purchase. so if it peels a few times and i get them replaced maybe they will just cut their losses and be willing to replace them with the gunmetal ones haha but i did email a bunch parts departments around the city to see

That's so silly. In the USA they are on every dealer's website.

Toyota Canada seems to really not like the 86. First they didn't bring the optional TRD handling package up here for the 2020s, then they price the GT 6M higher than the BRZ ts, and now they have me jumping through hoops just to try to get a simple quote on a set of expensive wheels that don't even seem to be part of any special edition up here. Makes no sense that wheels that only came with the RS 2.0 FR-S are not vin locked but wheels that are optional add-ons for previous new purchases are.

VIN #

Salty, did the dealer(s) say it had to be your VIN to search, or will any RS2 VIN meet their requirements?

At first the parts manager replied with

"Part# PTR2018160GR is also not available to purchase without a VIN of a vehicle that comes with these rims from factory. No Pricing available without appropriate vin."

i asked him if he could tell me which year/special edition of the frs/86 these wheels came with so that i could check the local frs/86 community and see if anyone in Edmonton has one.

he responded with

"In regards to the what years that the gun metal rims went on.. I have no information on special edition part numbers. They do not list it in the catalogue. It is only listed by specific VIN."

from it sounds like on his end, is that he can enter the part number into the computer and the item comes up but a VIN needs to be entered before he can pull any information and pricing on the part number?

I have no idea if it's even the RS 2.0 vin he needs but I haven't tried as i don't know anyone with an rs 2.0. But the RS 2.0 came with the black ones that he was able to pull up rather than the locked gunmetal ones.

PM sent.
Good Luck!
Twice in the past week I’ve received wrong parts after the first parts desk guy goofed.
Returned them to have another parts guy figure it out and order correctly. At Subaru I even had the exact part number, guy 1 said it was invalid. Guy 2 pulled it up instantly and ordered it up.
Trails and tribulations of building a BBK from scratch. Saving hundreds = some frustration.

"Hi Wilson,

Toyota Canada just contact me and said this:

Good Afternoon, I have been provided an update. The above part is not valid for this VIN. What we offer TRD 18' alloy wheels PTR56--18130, PTR56-18131, PU630-00001-TC and PU630-18130.

I won't be able to get you pricing without an appropriate VIN."

So the RS 2.0 VIN did not work. I'm seriously scratching my head now with this lol. There are no limited edition fr-s or 86 in Canada that I could search up that included these wheels stock. Unless these wheels are VIN locked to a certain 86 model year range where it was offered as an optional accessory.

Anyone (esp Canadians) remember seeing these wheels as an optional add-on when purchasing a brand new 86 remember the year(s) they were offered?

It's so weird that in the USA these wheels are freely purchasable while the PTR2018160BK actually has a note on the USA parts website saying "This is for the FR-S Release Series Only."
