Turbo FR-S and convertible plans axed?

Good read.

A Toyota-badged convertible or turbo-charged performance version of the Scion FR-S coupe was under consideration, but was deemed too expensive for its limited volumes. Toyota will leave those ideas to the aftermarket.

According to this they were both nixed. Not one instead of the other.

The report mentions the Scion FR-S stating that Toyota has abandoned plans for a convertible and a turbocharged model because they were "deemed too expensive for their limited volumes".
Personally, I'm not about speculation but that does make sense.

Report Says FR-S Turbo and Cabrio Axed

Quote:
The report mentions the Scion FR-S stating that Toyota has abandoned plans for a convertible and a turbocharged model because they were "deemed too expensive for their limited volumes". For what it's worth, Toyota has presented a near-production, convertible version of the GT 86/ FR-S, so we're not so sure if it has been axed. As for the Supra, we're told that the new coupe currently being co-developed with the BMW Group may be a spiritual successor to this model.

I thought Toyota was more likely to be using a supercharger as they did for the tC...

Both axed, it says that in the title of the article lol. You also missed the most interesting part of the article... New Supra with Toyota and BMW collaborating to build it. Cool to see some official info on that front. I had a feeling when i heard rumors about this collaboration that it would be towards the Supra, maybe developing a flat 6 engine? Twin turbo? Or my dream would be if they just put in ITB's on the flat 6... Mmmmmm

I think it all makes sense. Supra successor will probably go to Lexus as an "LSF" or something like that, JDM version will be a Toyota because they like to troll like that.

It fills the void for a high performance sports car, FR-S fills the low-end sports car niche, and receives incremental updates as a NA, as it gains more options and remains the Scion halo car.

No power upgrade for our cars unless the transmission is drastically upgraded.

http://kaizenfactor.wordpress.com/20...e-know-so-far/

The AZ6 can't take a lot of additional torque in factory form.

I believe we have cars over 400whp on stock trans. So far it doesn't seem to be the weak link. I know one case of a broken shift fork but that is it.

My guess is Subaru will be the one handed job of the turbo or SC for the twins as Toyotas putting alot of time into the 2015 Supra. Hope it happens as I'd love to get one if it looks to be good.
