WRX is cheaper to insure than BRZ/FRS

Yeah.

check that out. I was given a quote for $195 a month for a 2017 BRZ limited and $168 a month for WRX Premium with HK audio. The WRX is exactly $2000 more money after negotiation, but costs $313 dollars a year less to insure.

I have enormous coverage. Past $500k dollars. I have a business. I also live in New York. I am certain the price difference would be tiny between the two. BUT! There is no question that wherever I would price them, the BRZ limited is more than the WRX.

WRX is very cheap to insure. People really have bad records or an insurance salesman that they do not know personally if they are getting reverse results. WRX is only $28 dollars a year more than a Legacy 3.6R, the safest production sedan possible (0 death rate).

My BRZ cost more than my BMW 3 Series. NYC with Geico. Total 4 cars in policy.

Told you before that using death rates to determine safety is not even close to being accurate! There are many factors that go into determining the rates for cars and safety is only one very small part of it. Here the WRX is considerably more to insure. Probably is in loads of other areas as well. Hell, here a minivan cost more to insure than my FRS!

I have a 99' Cavalier Z24 I bought new that my son now drives, a 00' chevy work van and the 15' FRS. After getting the FRS, my insurance
dropped from $150 for two vehicles to $100 a month now for all three. Explain that one. Insurance is one of life's mysteries.

It's an AWD sedan in New York. Compared to a RWD coupe. Just that info by itself makes the insurance company think it'll be safer.

insurance companies are in the business of making money. it just sounds like they are spending more fixing the brz than the wrx so they charge more to insure them

This I could see being a reason.

Also...
In terms of HP per pound, the WRX and BRZ are pretty even.
WRX probably has better visibility.
Then there's the whole sedan vs coupe argument about insurance.
WRX might also be easier to repair due to availability of parts (do cheap non-OEM replacements of stock body panels even exist for the twins?)
Maybe there are more reported thefts/vandalism of BRZs in NYC?
An asshole SUV backing up can easily destroy the hood of a car like ours, where a sedan may get lucky with only bumper damage.

But really, I'm not quite getting the point of this thread.

Point of this thread was to write something I could never find online searching for months. Now this might come up in a search. Every other website and forum spoke about how expensive a wrx was to insure. In this clear case it was lower than the brz/frs and lower than many cars that are slow and simple.

Is what it is. Shop around and see if somebody can do better.

I pay $150 a month for my '16 STI and my wife's '13 Focus ST here in SoCal. Back when I lived in Oklahoma, my wife's ST and my FRS ran like $208 a month in insurance. It was the same when I had the WRX before my FRS too.

So the '12 WRX and '13 FRS I had cost the same to insure when I lived there. But now my STI is considerably cheaper, even after moving to CA. Only thing that's changed since I bought the STI was that I turned 25. Still no accidents/tickets between my wife and I though.

I am 23, considered high risk to insurance....

Full coverage for my BRZ is $93/mo in San Francisco Bay Area and my 2016 Toyota Corolla is $160/mo. I halfed my rated mileage for my BRZ which was previously $190/mo.

I got quotes for WRX and STI ('16MY). They came out to $250 and $230 respectively.

Again, 23 considered high risk but no tickets or accidents.

But insurance rates vary widely based on a lot of different factors. Someone else comparing insurance between WRX and BRZ might not come to the same conclusion you did.
