Yeah, star specs on the BRZ for me. I don't like them for anything that isnt dry, but i'll still have my 8 with rain shoes (Yokohama S.Drives) or snow shoes.

thats kinda what my idea was with this thread though, i wonder if something like star specs are gonna produce too much grip to get the ass out when you want... how is it with your 8?

if i'll have a 86 , i'll put it 235/35R19's for daily drive.

235/40R17's are going to be good for trackdays..

I can see a lot of people over tyring this car in pursuit of grip and more than likely ruin the way it drives and handles.

Id stick to 17s with stock profile and 235 on the rears as an absolute max. Compound is more important than width.

You really want to run wheels and tires that are .8" or so larger than the stock diameter on the street? Are you against braking, acceleration and handling on the street for some reason?

For autocross, emergency handling, and emergency braking the car will be better with stickier tires which will "ruin" the playful nature of the car.. It's a tradeoff I'm good with personally.

I'm going to let some of my ricer show here. I like fat tires. I think this car is going to look phenomenal with 245s all around on 8.5" wide wheels(not that that's fat, but it's wide enough for a car this small). However, that would have to come with a slew of other mods that may very well ruin what is supposedly sublime handling.

I have zero interest in having any one of the four tires break free on dry pavement. I want grip grip grip. I want to throw it confidently into corners at speeds that look insane to a commuter car. I'm used to doubling or tripling the yellow recommended curve speeds, and WILL NOT give that up.

Brakes are for, red lights, stop signs, and parking lots.

Not corners.

It's an interesting endless debate in the Miata world. The OEM susension is fun to slide around for some people, but adding grip and making it faster is at a loss of this, and some people don't like this. It is pretty much 'pick your favorite and follow it'.

I'll reserve judgement until I drive it.

To me, steering feedback is more important than whether it has excellent grip or insanely excellent grip. That the FT86's steering is reportedly awesome even with "Prius" tires makes me a happy camper.

yeah, ive had plenty of time in that camp, im ready to try out the dark side, and am looking at this as my vessel. ive definitely come to feel gobs of grip is no fun unless youve got even MORE GOBS of power, which the FT86 thus far doesnt seem to be packing

very interesting, this is what i was hoping to get at. so most people stick with oem suspension for sliding around? i would have thought switching to something a bit stiffer and maybe more even spring rates f/r would be one of the first steps.. sorry just a noob to that world

"Most" is too subjective. My 99's OEM suspension was REALLY tail happy. Ridiculously easy to catch, but as speeds went up, the looser I got. I would frequently find myself countersteering mildly at 75+ through recommended 55 curves that my 8 is planted in up into triple digits.

And frankly, that wasn't fun to me. Thrilling? Yes. But not fun.

I don't feel the need for more power to have fun, even with lots of grip. Most of my curve speeds are at or below my normal straight cruising speed, so throttle input is minimal.

To be honest I don't look at this car as an out for out track car so making it grip hard isn't something I'd bother with.

For the occasional track day it would do though i'd put something sticky on but again it wouldn't be any wider than 225.

something is wrong with your car then because it should have a front roll couple of over 60%

i love controlable grip. predictable, safe and fun. I am also not planning to auto x or play mr drift on the street. a track day for fun perhaps but could care less about my numbers. merge onto the freeway at 2 am maybe and canyons probably not. 225/45/17 for me stock offset of course
