Toyota only owns a 20% stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, not a controlling stake.

I think our speculation has to be based on some reality. If Subaru does follow through with a second generation I'm sure they're not going to build anything that will overlap a pre existing models' performance, features, and price point as that can potentially cannibal the sales of the other car.

I don't think they are in a position to make an overpriced niche sports car either.

A turbo version IS inevitable, however, subaru/toyota are in agreement to try to milk as many sales as possible while keeping as many cards as they can in their hand (novel technology).

The only things I would want in a 2nd gen are better brakes, better tires, reduced weight, and a turbo/engine/transmission that puts out a reliable 240whp.

(Eff it. While theyre at it..team up with google to build an SQ worthy headunit/touchscreen running android.) Thanks Subi-yota

Wait are you implying that they won't give us hybrid Porsche 918 performance with Prius gas mileage for less than $30k?

Phew glad I didn't sell mine yet.

Toyota Motor Corporation owns 16.48% of total shares.

Not a controlling interest but they're the single largest Major shareholder

It's cool. What I find interesting is Suzuki owns almost 2%

Which would put it in the price range of several other cars that already have their market niche filled.

Meanwhile other car manufacturers are trying to develop light, affordable RWD NA sports cars to compete in the same market segment with the 86. Toyota and/or Subaru would be foolish to price themselves right out of a market that's really just being served again.

The sad part is that even if Subaru comes up with a more powerful version the pundits will find a different reason to bash on the car. Now it's lack of power, then it will be crap interior, less HP than XXX, worse value than YYY, unusable back seats, etc. Not sure if I have ever seen a car more hated than the twins...

Go Subaru!

Another NA engine is possible but unlikely.

1) Even if the current twins made 250hp, people would still criticize the lack of perceived torque/power in the rpm range used daily. See RX-8, S2000. Hell, even modern reviews of the E46 and E9x complain about the same thing —when compared to newer cars such as the M235i or M4.

2) MPG, emissions, engine displacement impact on taxes and insurance in other countries. Industry as a whole is moving to boosted or hybrid solutions.

A 1.6/1.8L I4 turbo would be ideal. Smaller engine would compensate for the added hardware of the turbo. Would yield better MPG in everyday driving, be more eco friendly, less taxes in Europe and other countries, and finally the torque gains and wider power band would make the car more fun on the street and the freeway.

A NA 2.5L would please the purists, but they (we) are a very small market.

A separate thought is the possibility of Subaru killing the STI trim of the WRX, and making the 2nd gen BRZ their halo sports car.

That's what they are saying lately. But this engine will come from BMW and not Subaru. Given the current status, we'll only get a 2nd generation FRS and GT86. Subaru cannot go alone with a 2nd generation BRZ. Currently, they are pretty busy to design their uniform platform for their next generation of Forester's, Outback's, WRX's, Legacy's etc. BRZ will not fit really well in this direction because it is a RWD and not an AWD platform. Even now, Subaru mentions that the manufacturing costs of the BRZ are pretty much high. Within Subaru, BRZ is a unique platform of its own!

A 2.5L NA Boxer engine would be much better, but it won't happen. Even the current 2.0L Boxer engine will seem exotic in a few years from now. Porsche is in the design labs to make a 2.0L NA Boxer engine, so you can assume where we are going. Everything will be go back to smaller displacements.
