Ok, the dash tells you average mpg and I set it when I fill my tank.

Plus I have been filling my tank from the same pump and fill until it clicks i havent been topping off. I take the amount of miles on the trip meter and divide by the amount of fuel I bought. which is almost exactly the same as the average mpg meter in the dash.

I dont follow as to how I am doing this wrong...

If you haven't done so already, try turning on the function that tells you when to shift for best fuel economy and accelerate slowly. Use cruise control on the highway. See if your mpg improves.

I have about 1200 miles on the car. I take back roads to and from work (country driving). I'm getting 30-31 mpg on average.

ahh.. then you are one of the few who know how to calculate correctly.

What RPM do you shift at and what RPM do you like to cruise at?

600 miles, no highways miles, 23.8 MPG average. It's steadily rising.

He said under 4k, even if he's cruising at 3000+ rpm that usually isn't going to be 18.5mpg bad.

You may just be driving harder than you think. Keeping the rpm low helps, but not if you're foot is deep into the accelerator frequently. Try practicing using smoother accelerator inputs.

Maybe take it a local tuner who can do a few dyno pulls under normal driving loads and maybe WOT as well to watch the AFR's, that may tell you if it's gobbling abnormal amounts of fuel...

I have an automatic, and on my recent road trip (950+ miles, all highway) I calculated my only full tank that I used during the trip (that's right, I only bought gas twice!). I averaged 65-68 mph, and got 36.2 mpg. I'm at just over 4,300 miles on the odometer now.

6MT, averaging 29-31, 70/30 city/hwy. I'm not entirely easy on it either.

26.3 mpg @ 1100 miles on odo. I gun it at every stoplight, and shift around 5-6K with utter disregard for speed limits. 70/30 city/hwy. Suffice it to say, fuel cost is not an issue.

So far with a manual I am getting around 25.5-26. I rev it pretty good quite often(not all the time) and in on the street I tend to be in the 3-4K(in first and second, I will sometimes hit 5-6K RPMS) 95% of the time. I have a manual too. I think you are just running her to hard and having to much fun! On a trip up to Santa Barbra, I got 400 miles on a tank which is right on the mark of 30-31MPG
