2017 Toyota 86 recommended oil change at 16,000km

So I'm nearing the 8000km mark in my 2017 Toyota 86 and I kept checking the Toyota Canada website for the service schedule since my car didn't come with one and it wasn't available online until recently. In the online service schedule it states that the oil and filter change should be at 16,000km, the dealership asked for it to be done at 8000km. I would prefer to perform at closer to 16,000 as I don't feel compelled to give away money for possibly unneeded oil changes.

I haven't tracked my car, and don't drive it particularly hard usually, I treat it more like a DD with some occasional fun.
When would you get an oil change done?

There is a disclaimer stating that: 2016 MODEL YEAR SPECIAL OPERATING CONDITIONS - If you drive primarily under any of these operating conditions, you should replace the engine oil and filter 8k/6M: Driving on dirt roads or dusty roads, extensive idling and/or low-speed driving for long distances, such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery service, towing a trailer, using a camper or car top carrier.

Change it at 8K with a a recommended synthetic. This is your first oil change. I did mine at 4K. It's the break in oil change, get the particles of metal from the surfaces rubbing against each other out of there. This is a car, not a toy, take care of it if you want it to run optimally and last.

I have been changing it every 8k all summer, all winter, track days, autocross, etc for the last 3 years with no problems

since it's a brand new car the first couple of oil changes are important. If you don't want to pay butt loads of money for a simple oil change, do it yourself.

And if shit happens delearship can denny warranty

Aren't your first few oil changes free? Oh, wait that was when it was Scion FRS.....get the oil change done or the stealership may tell you down the road you didn't do factory suggested oil change & not honor new car warranty or somthing....

Ya know, there, rkaywhodat .......although my gut tells me that the first oil change at 16,000 km would be just fine ........ I wouldn't risk crossing the dealer (in case of future warranty work) and go with their recommended first change 8,000 km.

Heck, I remember, back on the farm, we would change the oil out of the new car and put it into the old truck and take the oil out of the old truck and put it into the oldest tractor.

When I left the farm, my father had gone through 4 new cars .........and we had the same 1937 tractor and 1941 truck ....... and they both run just fine.

I had my free oil change until 36k miles. After that I oil change myself every 5k miles.

While some caution about warranty issues I will add this: dealers and other lube shops that make money on this don't always follow the actual maintenance schedule but use shorter intervals to make more money. I would contact Toyota at the corporate level to confirm. As long as you follow what is required per the manual you shouldnt have issues with warranty. For a first change though doing it early isn't a bad idea as wear is higher on new parts so it'll get dirty a bit faster then normal but you still need the correct info for all the changes after that.

On a side note how did a new car not come with an owner's manual?

I cut the factory interval in half; that's basically what your dealer's doing. Frequent oil changes are the least you can do.

Unless you are tracking that is way overkill. There is not advantage to cutting it in half since they already figured what was needed and cut that in half.

Not free in Canada even with the FRS. We didn't get that deal here.
