It is intended to be an entry level sports car yes but it is not a dedicated sports car. But odds are (pure speculation I admit) that it will not be a whole lot cheaper when or even if they make it. It is still only a concept as made very clear by the Toyota spokesman that introduced it o a Japan release is probably at least a couple of years away. That does not mean it will even be brought to the US. You may have a long wait. If price is your concern then there are loads of good deals on used FRS or BRZs out there that would save you that $5K.

You know, I'd suggest the new Miata, but even that's probably too expensive for what you're looking for.

I'm gonna have to agree that a used twin or an older Miata might be in your range.

Toyota also announced that the 2017 FR-S will come totaled from factory.

No, but seriously, that's more clickbait.

Yes I'm looking at Miatas too. I'm wary of used but I probably won't buy for another 10 months or so.

No, Toyota has not announced any such thing.

And citing another clickbait does not confirm the first. In fact they are quoting motoring.au which is sort of the Grand Master of the clickbaits. They make shit up and the others run with it. There are probably 100 sites running with fictional info from motoring now but not one single official word from Toyota other then they are working on a concept.

Yes, but it's been established here that clickbait articles like that have absolutely no credibility whatsoever. Unless the news is from an official Toyota pressroom site, there is no point in believing anything otherwise.

As for the Miata, I'm no expert on it, but there's plenty of Miata guys here that might point you in the right direction if you choose to go down that route.

Well I'm not sure on the specs but I meant Toyota has announced this car at a recent show. As a 'concept', but I'm hoping it comes out.

Interesting to see indeed, but if they release this at all, I doubt it will be an entry-level sports car, since the 86 is already fulfilling that role.

Well they're aiming for a very low price point in Japan, like $13k

For anybody that still believes the clickbait sites have real info the attached really creates questions about if Subaru even actually filed a patent.

Nah Toyota was very clear that it will indeed be an entry level "sports car" placed below the FRS. They are also talking about one above the FRS but so far both are only concepts and may never even see production (no matter what the clickbaits say). But, as an entry level car it will be a lower powered, quasi econobox that will be purposely designed not to complete with or replace the FRS. I am not in any way convinced we will see them over here anyway so the whole question may be mote.

It seemed to me that if this went into production, it would be as a kei car (not sure if it meets Japan standards to be one though) and would be something along the lines of the Suzuki Cappucino. However, regardless of whether or not it was purposely designed to compete with the FR-S, I have a feeling that it will still hurt sales of the FR-S and possibly even the iQ if the production model (assuming Toyota even greenlights it) ends up being like the concept.

Plus, imagine Scion (assuming it's branded as such) trying to market the S-FR when it already sells the FR-S. It's gonna create a bit of confusion.

I think we've digressed enough from the topic as is talking about the S-FR; after all, there's already a dedicated thread on the forum about it.
