Static audio with radio reception? FRS stock stereo

Has anyone experienced this? Or know what might be the issue here?
On the stock pioneer headunit, when i am listening to FM or AM radio, i hear the audio through that radio station but extremely static-y / distorted.

I figure its NOT the speakers, because when i switch to AUX or USB, and listen through another device, (iphone, android unit), audio is perfectly fine as its always been.

It hasnt always been like this, about 2 month ago, i turned on the headunit, and heard the radio very distorted, which worried me. I drove around turned the car off, and when i started it back up again, radio reception was back to normal.

Since then it happened once in a bit, and it would eventually work again.
But this time around it seems like the FM or AM radio is staying with that distorted static-y sound.

I know its not the location, since it is now happening in front of my house and in places where i know i always got great reception. I also never touched the antenna before this. This is like the first full week it stayed like this, and i tried unscrewing and re-tightening the antenna to no avail.

Any help or insight is appreciated, otherwise it might be time to take it to the dealer. My feeling is that its a problem with the antenna.

Try disabling the HD radio. I've had some issues with it.

I've noticed that local radio stations don't seem to come through as clear in this car versus others... Maybe it just has a poor antenna?

Do you still have the stock antenna?

Ive noticed my radio reception declining over the past few weeks as well. HD tends to go in and out on certain stations, and others are just static-y.

I do still have the stock antenna (although i should have my VG sharkfin this week...)

Mine is the same static distortion across all stations. And i just tried some troubleshooting, and it sounds exactly the same with or without the antenna screwed on. so this leads me to believe that the headunit doesnt have a connection to the antenna anymore or that the antenna has just completely stopped functioning.

I am going to try to find some time to take the head unit out and make sure the antenna is connected... or try connecting the new sharkfin antenna and see if that works.

Otherwise, i dont know. dealership time.

Otherwise i mig

Theres another connection for the antenna, but its behind the headliner. At this point, Id just go to the dealer.

Thanks, didnt think of that.
At this point you're right, i'll probably just go to the dealer.

Would you or anyone happen to know how to remove the headliner?

Well just an update, took it to the dealer, turns out it was a faulty headunit, switched it with a new one and now all fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help!

Thanks! I've been pretty concerned about the poor reception I've been having. Very few channels come in clearly and some of the channels seem to fade in and out a little bit (like turning the HD radio on and off, although I've got the HD feature turned off). I'll just try taking it into the dealer and see if the head unit has a problem.

BRZ poor FM and zero AM reception

Just got our base model BRZ Monday. FM reception is poor, and can't get any station on AM. Makes little to no difference if I unscrew the antenna. The most I get is 1 bar on the signal strength icon even that is weak as the stereo lite goes on and off and get some static. Suggestions.?
