So if the darn thing drives more refined and is closer to a VW then I think they've hit the target well. Perhasp Honda's target for the SI isn't the same demographic before (the this is my first sports car performance car) that market went to the BRZ/FRS at this point. But it's targeting the people who wanted more refinement and a little more speed in a Sedan or Coupe (remember the Civic is the last FWD coupe you can buy and you get a hell lots more in terms of tech and package than a BRZ) It's made for people who doesn't care about performance. I think Honda is betting itself on the Enthusiast will just buy the Civic Type R. Which I think they will.

Remember Statistically speaking the enthusiast crowd is small and at this point, they're about our age, with few younger generation caring about HP/TQ but more if the car has android auto or car play. The Civic SI is also American, it's based on the Touring and EX trim, while the Type R is actually an LX upgraded. That's saying something in ride quality and interior quality. Things we might not care about, but other people will I bet you the Si that stupid thing will sell anyways. (Not the coupe Honda has reported that only 30% of sales are coupe, sucks for the last coupe of the affordable market thats not RWD(good for us))

Besides that back to the Si, It's a great car, it's still a fun car. It's just not the car you remembered starting your performance car owning experience and it's definitely not the EK9 you wanted it to be like in the 2000s, World has moved on! If you're looking however for another 2015 style civic si, go buy a Hyundai they have the 2.0 Sport that's very similar and is just as well equipped (no LSD of course)

Great post. However that's definitely not true of the Type R anymore. Maybe it's because it's also sold in the US now but it's definitely not a "bare-bones" model.

Also very interesting theory about Honda's demographic target with the new Civic. I feel like someone seeking out refinement in a vehicle also wants something that doesn't have an exterior design that would have looked at home in a circa 1990s Pontiac line up.

It doesn't matter what the car looks like as long as it has those red Honda badges from the factory.

Apparently the Si can be tuned for a lot of power - unfortunately the stock clutch slips when you increase the stock power level

They got 255 whp out of it and 300 wtq, reduced down to 245whp and 300 wtq for reliability concerns

My old Srt-4 made 230whp from the factory. That was over 10 years ago.

Honda finally catching up, huh? My old roommate's Skittle made 245 whp stock too, love how they underrated the HP from the factory lol. That was a fun car to drive.

The difference is that the Neon is a piece, and the Honda is a good car.

Crash the dodge into a pole at 55 and you're dead. In the Honda you have a good chance to live without permanent injuries. That's 10 years of progress.

Hmmm maybe I will wait another 10 years then so I can buy a car that drives itself and has 30 airbags standard.

That's not my point, even at the time the Neon's crash performance was abysmal. There's a reason they weren't able to sell it that way in Europe. The crash structure was garbage, and the passenger cell too weak. In the frontal 35mph test the doors opened due to the passenger cell deforming so badly, and the steering column impacted the driver.

Being fast does not require good engineers, building a safe car does.

Somehow I missed this. I'm liking the hatchback sport. If it had been around when I was looking for a daily I would have at least test drove it. It's kind of strange the SI is coupe and sedan only. And it looks like most sports are CVT, unfortunately.

What's up with guys putting Red Honda emblems on their Si, or even their DX trim Civics? Complete disrespect to the Type R and RICE as hell. Some of these cars are automatic too.

Just as bad as guys putting ///M emblem on base BMW or fake AMG Mercs

@johan what do you think about the first gen TSX? Specifically the 06+ models with the updated K24A2 (I've read the 04-05 models burn oil). I think it could be a good daily/occasional autocross track car. I've read they have good suspension setups and dat K24.
