Really, really hoping the rumors are true!
Take my money again Subaru!
I think it's a very safe bet that it won't have a FA24DIT. An NA FA24 on the other hand, that seems like a fairly probable possibility.

GoAutoNews has just leaked that it might be powered by a 1.8L turbo boxer engine with a significant increase in power and torque , without any detriment to weight /balance/handling.
But would it not need a bigger fuel tank or many more trips to the local fuel station?

Almost 100% sure there is no 1.8. There is a 1.6 turbo that Subaru keeps in Japan that comes in the Levorg and others that is rather awesome. Although if there is a 1.8 turbo anything is possible.

I doubt they would bring it over here for just one vehicle though, it would have to be in the midst of them going all turbo on all their cars.

The number one thing people keep forgetting is the cars are built within Japan's vehicle tax system, which underwent a significant revision last year. The biggest change is a reduction in the engine displacement tax.

For 2020 and beyond, there is now less of a penalty (as a car manufacturer) if you go with a larger engine but emphasize efficiency. The need to be limited to 2.0L is a lot less for the second generation car.

^ That could be a factor in Toyota selecting the next motor. I’m glad they are looking more at efficiency instead of only displacement. Although the two usually go hand in hand. Subies 2.4 liter turbo would be AMAZING in the 86/BRZ

Interesting.

The tax may go down on larger displacements but it would appear there is still a huge incentive to keep displacements at or below 2 litres anyway.

The amount of tax for new automobiles will decrease more as the scale of engine displacement becomes smaller to 2,000 cc or less, particularly the tax for compact cars with 2,000 cc or less engine displacement. For example, a consumer who purchases a new compact car with 2,000 cc or smaller engine displacement in or after October 2019 will enjoy a reduction in their annual tax rate by about 10% to 15% from the conventional tax rate up to a maximum annual reduction of 4,500 yen.

the tax is per year, so if you plan on owning a car for 5+ years, it adds quite a bit of cost to ownership.

plus, I'm specifically referencing Japan because they are changing this to reward efficiency. The old system tied an efficient engine to small displacement, so you had all sorts of small turbocharged engines. But it was also a system put in place in the 1950s, so there was no technological reason for it.

Regulation-wise, there's no longer an incentive to build engines based on displacement limits.

I understand all that but the wording still shows a distinct and possibly significant advantage to keeping the displacement at 2 or under.
