Digging up old AE86 revival rumors
Having actually owned an AE86 as a daily driver for 2 years (before it fell apart), this sounds way more like the car I used to have.
A 2007 article: http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/01/r...-more-details/ "The new article goes into some detail of the new car's spec. Under 4m long and 1.7m wide, it's pretty low at 1.35m tall, and engineers have been directed to keep weight below 1,000kgs. Power will come from a 1.5L 2NZ-FE good for 120 horsepower. What has been unknown until this time is where Toyota would source a cheap RWD drivetrain, but Best Car has learned that it will come from new partner Fuji Heavy Industries - better known to you and me as Subaru. And the best news of all? The committee's final directive is to keep the new car's sticker price below 1.5million Yen. That's about $12,300 USD in today's money."

i don't think we'll be seeing sub ton cars for under 50k, ever. saftey standards are just too high for people to skimp on sheet metal.

I read the article. It talks about said car being in showrooms come Winter 2008.
Is the article actually talking about the FR-S/BRZ/GT86 here? My guess is that it is. What other car matches the linage of an AE86 better then the GT86? I suspect there really is no 2nd AE86 and the article is talking about the GT86 before the details became known to the world. bneale |

I thoroughly remember this article. I wish I could go back in the past and tell myself to anticipate a longer wait...by almost 4 years.

+1 A 1000kg (sub 1 ton car) would mean plenty of carbon fiber parts, aluminum chassis etc. In today's safety requirements its almost impossible to make a MASS produce cheap 1 ton car... Civic late 90s Type R, did it (920kg), but that would FAIL safety standards today... heck my MR2 SW20 would also fail.... I mean have you guys seen crash photos of MR2s??.... frontal crash = 50% compression of the car, most likely the engine bay and Rear Half would be structurally identifiable, but the front half would be compressed to a pancake. |

That article is a great example of how full of it journalists are when it comes to cars that aren't out yet. I remember articles that said the '08 STI was supposed to be a 2-door hatch with 350hp, and a sedan would be available that year too.
The only reliable info comes direct from the horse's mouth. Anything else is speculation at best. |
