Needs more power.... I mean the handling is great but why didn't Miata give it 300-500hp? NO ONE is going to buy it with 155 hp... I think if they would have kept the weight at 2300lbs and bumped the power up to at least 300 and priced in around 20k they would have a lot more interest.

People (except for @tennisfreak) are mad sleeping on the fact that Fiat will install it's 1.4L Turbo multi-air in two versions, base and Abarth into the Miata chassis. That sets the engine at 160 WHP and 180+ WTQ from the factory. http://jalopnik.com/fiat-may-steal-t...lfa-1535208727 More importantly, these engines only need a tune to reach a reliable >200 WHP and >200 WTQ and have been doing it for years. http://www.fiat500usaforum.com/showt...f-ECU-upgrades Miata fanboys might be sad to know that the hot Miata won't be badged Mazda at all but instead Fiat and it could be the sports car bargain of the decade. **Would still take my 2+2 ESC FR-S over it though for a DD. |

Remains to be seen.
If Fiat does a "base" 124 with a mildly turbocharged 1.4 multi-air, it could be roughly the same price as a base Miata with the 155hp 2.0L Skyactive 4 banger. The Abarth version (with the same engine, just more boost), will be about 3k-4k more than that but also include a more aggressive suspension and exhaust. Both engines are simply tuned versions of each other. So the Base 1.4 L should still reach >200 WHP with only a tune. This will be the one to get if you intend to mod the car. |

The new mx-5 has less HP/lbs than the previous gen miata also.

@DAEMANO @Sideways&Smiling
You're assuming FCA is capable of making the Spider. They haven't even shown a concept yet and they are responsible for so many things that could make the car a lame duck before the sheet even gets pulled off of it from suspension to aesthetics to the powertrain. The MultiAir is fantastic, the Abarth (500) is the most fun I've ever had on public roads but it's well known that the suspension is lacking when pushed hard despite not delivering a comfortable ride (a compromise where nobody wins unlike the Miata or Toyobaru or GTI). Hell this thing could end up being FWD under Marchionne's quest to become a behemoth of industry. I don't think the 1.4L has ever been mounted longitudinally and I haven't heard any rousing success stories on reliability for it... In a perfect world, FCA would drop the MultiAir into a rolling chassis done by Mazda along with some styling differences and call it a day, it'd be a hoot. Edit: @tahdizzle that doesn't mean it's slower, I'll take a guess that the new 2.0L is a bit torque-ier than the outgoing model, combined with the weight loss stock for stock I bet it will outperform the outgoing model in most scenarios except maybe a drag race. We're not here to do elevenses though |

I don't have a doubt that its a performer in what people look for in a mitata. The new miata has about 10lbs*ft of torque more than the out-going miata, but they really only shaved a little more than 100lbs.
So honestly, I have no idea what the hype is all about. I don't know official weights of the old engine and tranny vs. new engine and tranny, but there is the ~100 lbs right there probably.
