I've had a Cosworth panel filter installed for nearly a year and this was my 4th oil change. There's no doubt that the desert environment is at least partially responsible for the elevated silicon level as it's always windy and dusty here in Las Vegas. I've since cleaned it and ordered an AFE dry panel filter which I plan to clean and/or replace more frequently. Thanks for your feedback and I look forward to the next UOA to see if silicon levels improve.

My 3rd oil change at 10,000 miles with about 5,000 miles on the oil - Amsoil Signature 0W/20. I plan on changing it in 5,000 mile intervals to keep things simple.

Great thread. Very informative for those of us with new FR-Ss wondering about when to do our first change and with what oil.

For me, there seems to be solid evidence in these results that the factory fill is good stuff. There is also a strong pattern of owners being encouraged to go longer on their oil change intervals - like 7k- 10k. Unless I've missed something in this thread, or in other related threads, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of Blackstone telling owners that they should have gotten that initial fill out of their cars earlier due to poor oil performance.

I appreciate the concern of owners who do early changes and I have been firmly in that camp with previous cars. But, newer oil technologies make me lean more towards the standard 7500 mile initial interval. Also, the OEM TGMO seems to get good press here.

Plenty of great, objective info here.

If you keep it at 5,000 mile intervals, I would probably switch to Amsoil OE. If you would have gotten a TBN, it probably would have been very high showing lots of life left in the oil. 10,000 miles would probably be doable on the Signature Series.

With no engine mods and no track time, a street driven 86 can do 7,500 miles on pretty much any GF5 0W-20 IMO. And you can probably thank the Toyota DI for these low fuel dilution numbers. The 2.0DIT Forester's are having some bad fuel dilution issues, especially during winter idling, and the oil viscosity on their 5W-30 uoa's is as low or lower than most of the 0W-20 uoa's on here.

The 2.0 DIT WRX's are a little better although I've seen fewer winter uoa's on the WRX.

Whats going on guys...just got back my latest UOA. I did not change my oil for over one year (not intentional) and the UOA came back good. I am also running K&N air filter.

What oil were you using? How many miles in that year?

Futher to my post above, Tony's experience is more empirical evidence that a good oil can hold up well in this engine.

I will be on my initial factory fill for a while and am confident that when it's changed at 6 mos/6K miles it'll still have plenty of life left.

I used Toyota's 0w20 for that run. I went 14 months and put a little over 7k thousand miles on the oil. Those 7k miles would be considered hard compared to most drivers

Here's my UOA @ 25,000 miles (5,000 mile OCI) with 5qts Mazda 0w-20 Moly + 1qt Mobil One 0w-40. I'm using an AFE Dry panel filter and a black OEM oil filter.

Here's my second UOA. Lookin' real good. This is daily driven, stop and go traffic (changed jobs since the first UOA). As previously mentioned by others, Toyota 0w20 has no problems with DD usage...

PS (my handwriting is crap, I meant to write "Toyota Synthetic" not "Total Synthetic")
