Thumbs up Toyota FT-86 / Subaru 216A: They come at the end of 2011 indeed!!!

In a 東京新聞 (Tokyo Newspaper) interview with the President of Fuji Heavy Industries Mori Ikuo, it was revealed that the Subaru version will be presented at the end of 2011, and from what I could understand from the Japanese text, it will be revealed in December. Toyota is expected to launch it also at the same time.

The article also reveals that testing, as well as the body of the car have been almost completed, and tests are been carried out at the moment in order to fine tune the car for foreign markets. Mori revealed that the car is very comfortable and fuel efficient. The low seating position, in conjunction with the low centre of gravity, result in feeling very confident in driving it.

The price will be around 2,500,000 ¥.

2,500,000 yen = 30,000 usd

This better be one amazing machine for the base price to be that high.

At this point though, if it turns out to be nothing more than a RWD DC2 Integra Type R I would be more than happy and probably line up to be first to get buggered for $30,000.

I forsee Toyobaru pricing themselves right out of their intended market if they continue down this path. Then the bean counters can say we told you there was no market for this type of vehicle now back to making multiple prius derivatives because that's what the mouth-breathers want.

it's been said many, many, MANY times that you can't do a straight currency conversion from yen to dollar in order to speculate on the price of a car. generally speaking cost of living is much higher in japan and the price of any consumer product is higher in japan than it is in the us.

example: the FJ Cruiser in japan costs 3,140,000 yen. the cost of an FJ Cruiser in the US is 25,000-27,000. there's no telling how much this car is gonna cost until a US price is announced officially from toyota.

You can't just do a currency conversion to get the price we'll have to pay here. Take a look at all the cars sold both here and in the UK. A simple currency conversion doesn't accurately reflect the prices people pay.

Same thing happens when you compare prices in Japan to prices here. 2009 Honda S2000 cost $35,000 here, but 3.8M Yen in Japan (http://www.relojapan.com/livingcost.asp). If you assume the same ratio applies here, then a 2.5M Yen car in Japan ends up costing about $23,000 here. That's been about what people have been predicting.

The major caveat is the Yen is getting stronger, so the ratio might end up being a bit different, but the main point--that you can't simply do a currency conversion to predict the price of a car in USD by using the price of a car in Yen--still stands.

Edit: Thank you Cyde01. Sorry for the repeat post.

On a side note, yen isn't stronger, it's more or less same it has been since before the gfc. The usd just isn't worth shit any more :p

CR-Z JDM MSRP 2,270,000 Yen
CR-Z USDM MSRP $19,000 USD.

As it's been said a million times, you can't do a straight conversion.

I predict a ~24k MSRP +/- $500 bucks depending on how the Yen swings this year.

Strength/weakness of a currency is always gonna be relative.

Yea, we tend to get all cars for about 40% cheaper than the rest of the world.. so about 23,000 seems about right for a FT-86

Can't wait. A little surprised that the Subie version might come out before the Toyota considering how much info on the Subie version we've seen.

Eh? No where has there been any such speculation made at all. in fact, the blog post speculates that the subaru and toyota will be released at the same time. let's not get baseless new rumors started.
