Our Maid of Honour worked for Apple Canada in the early 80s. She was paid straight commission and stock options at about $2 a share. She left in 84 because "this company isn't going anyplace". She cashed in the stocks in 86 or 87 and made about $15K (I don't remember how many she had or what they were worth at the time). I can't even imagine what they would be worth now!
