Excuse my ignorance, but what are the crickets? I imagine it's ticking sound from my engine. 17' MT w/6400 miles.

Interesting, thanks for sharing. My S2000 did something similar but more like a ticking diesel at 70k. Valve adjustment and it disappeared until 120k.

Only shell 91 and royal purple injector cleaner, 15 months cricket free! However after long trips they almost sound like they want to come back (real faint) but the next day I start her up she purrs.

Wait, I thought the new fuel pump fixed the crickets? Don't remember the part # but I think it was released in Nov 2016. Toyota installed mine via TSB about 20k miles ago and my crickets have been gone ever since. And that's running both E85 and Shell 93. Is it possible some of the early 2017's got the old fuel pump before the change?

I doubt that actually works. Seems like it "worked" for some people and did nothing for others, which is potentially a sign the situations where it "worked" were just confirmation bias.

If you think it works anyway, be sure what you're using is ashless. That Walmart stuff you linked doesn't say anywhere that it's ashless or low ash. Running high ash oil through a fuel system can cause carbon buildup on engine valves.

It's not ticking. This engine sounds like a sewing machine, but that's not the crickets. The crickets are the high-pitched chirping you could hear in that video. With the hood closed, it often sounds exactly like crickets.

Once I stopped at a gas station in rural Louisiana for some coffee. While I was inside the store, I heard what sounded like my engine chirping and had a moment of panic thinking someone had started up my car outside. But no, it wasn't my car. There was a cage of bait crickets in the store for the fishermen.

No amount of valve adjustment will fix the chirping, because it's not valves. It's the high pressure fuel pump. This car is not the only car that has the issue. Some other cars with HPFPs also chirp.

You have a 50/50 chance of the chirps. I think there were/was three iterations of the pump. IIRC, someone here a few years ago had two or three dealer-replaced pumps and they all chirped.

Luck of the draw, no big deal.

2017 MT BRZ, 25,000kms.

No chirping. Have run 94 (ethanol free) and mostly run 91 (~10% ethanol).

Honestly, I never understood why this bothers most owners. I just consider it a quirk of the car.

It sounds like something is broken/loose. I can't stand when things squeak or rattle and have the urge to fix it as soon as possible.

Pretty sure it's not luck of the draw anymore. I've gone 20,000 miles on the latest fuel pump (SU003-07326) and the chirps have been totally silenced. I'd recommend this TSB for anyone who is still under warranty and is having this problem.

I had the latest pump installed by the dealer about a year ago. My chirps came back last month. It only chirps occasionally though and it seems quieter.

I love all the pure mechanical sounds this car makes. Crickets and sewing machine included. It just reinforces what this car is intended to be and why I chose it over other cars.

In fact, sound is one of the reasons I chose a PD supercharger over centrifugal or turbo. So much better (to my ears) than exaggerated blow off valves and overly loud and raspy exhausts that seem to dominate the aftermarket for so many cars.

Squeaks and rattles, on the other hand...... Uggg. So far my '17 is rattle free @ 20K miles.
