Regardless, Toyota is going to offer a higher output engine. Maybe not at launch, but eventually. They will not want to alienate the group of buyers who want to buy faster car, who have the "go fast" syndrome, and actually cross shop this thing against other sports cars, like a Mustang, GC, or 370z. Not everybody will know the purpose or history behind this car. Believe it or not, there will be a LOT of people who do that.

They better because everything else is close to or way over 300 HP...but they all weigh over 600 pounds more so......I say turbo this thing...300 HP would be perfect...that is not going to add much weight...but it will change the dynamics so I get that...

Its hard to believe that the new 911 weighs about 3000 pounds and have 400HP....damn! Just goes to show you, you have have light weight and a lot of power at the same time.....Toyota you got that? Make us a new supra off the FT-86 platform....

It's not that hard to believe when you look at the price... when you have a car that's 1/3rd of the price you are going to have to give something up. Some cars give up the light weight and keep the 400hp, this one gives up the 400hp and keeps the light weight.

Price is everything! Just from reading over the threads it seems as though $24k is about the sweet spot for most people and will be the cutoff for either waiting or looking elsewhere for their next purchase.

Though the peak torque and power numbers don't surprise me, the manual's curve is FUBAR.

If we assume that torque and power are using the same RPM scale, and that it's 1000 RPM per line, then the graph's RPM range appears to be 2000 to 8000. That would put peak torque at 5800 rather than 6600 and peak power at 7300 rather than 7000. However, plotting the torque curve at this scale results in peak power at only 133 kW (but at the expected 7000 RPM rather than 7300). So the power and torque curves simply don't match each other.

Out of curiosity, I plotted a power curve based only on the torque curve (using various scales, but assuming the peak is 6600 RPM). The numbers don't reconcile (for 147 kW) unless this curve goes way past redline.

Hypothetically, suppose this is an early version of the curve on which peak torque was at 5800. For kicks, I smoothed it out a bit and left in the (unusually large) mid-range bump, but moved it so that peak torque occurs at 6600. My curve has no basis in reality, but it's included for anyone interested (converted to HP and lbf*ft for convenience).

Life sucks for us in Australia. I know someone in Toyota and this will be between $35-40k + on road costs. Still won't stop me from being the first to buy it !!! Can't be surprised since everything is overpriced in Aust. ! Its just the way it is here.

Just want to point out, I'm sick of hearing all the complaints of the lack of power for the motor. Think about it. Toyota hasn't had a sports car in ages. This thing has been developed for the last 6-7 years ? Developed in such a way that I have never seen for a entry level sports car. Emissions standards are killing sports cars these days. If it's not enough power for you, then buy a 90's turbo sports car and get over it.

Never thought I would dump my st162 celica(3sge) for any car. But I know it's time. Just hoping it can keep going for another 6-8 months !

By the way. I'm the same. Everyone hates me as I can't stop talking about this car !

Well around $40k is not that bad. My st162 had a rrp of $34k? in 1989. 22 years ago! Wonder how much it was back then in the U.S...

Ohh my poor car. It has been slapped around the last month. Had to remove the air filter and fang the car around everywhere ever since the leaks started.
