Yaris GR engine into an 86
I know this is more about fantasies than real things, but what a great match that could be if they planted Yaris 1.6 turbo into the new car?
I only see benefits: • Torque. First of all - torque! 360 nm or so they claim on Yaris; • Weight. Inline 3 engine would be much lighter than boxer 4 even with all turbo stuff on it (hence the better weight distribution, hence improved cornering, etc, etc); • Balance. Since the engine is straight and not flat it would be possible to push it further into wheelbase without interfering with the steering column (center of gravity is not moving forward, or probably even gets more inward); • Cost. No additional development needed - they've got their own engine, just need to place it; • Perfect fitment into model line - junior Supra has bigger displacement 4 cylinder. Now for probable cons: • Boxer engine has lower cog than inline one (which I think is absolutely canceled out by weight difference) • 3 cylinder turbo noise (no good, but fa20 was also not a music to ears) That's it. Your thoughts? Last edited by salty_91; 11-27-2020 at 08:09 PM. |

It'll be an interesting swap for sure.
motor looks pretty tall compared to the boxer though, might take a bit to fit. Just need someone with boatloads of money to do it. |

Someone like Toyota themself
I mean n/a is great, and it pleases me to think I've got Porsche like flat engine under the bonnet, but some extra torque (and a bit more power) would breathe life into the car (and boost their sales by the way). |

I highly doubt that they care about boosting sales. These are not profit margin cars and are a planned limited run.

Less weight won't change CG, at least not it's height. Moving any weight up (even an ounce) will move the CG up even if the weight stays the same. Lighter weight higher up is likely to also move the CG up even if you keep it the same front to back.

"The unit is in fact the largest-capacity and most powerful three-cylinder engine currently in production, yet it is also the smallest and lightest 1.6 turbo unit." that's what they write on it. |

I'll never own an engine again that has the oil filter hanging off the side!

Looks like they don't, but.. why simply not to make a better car having all the ingredients to do so, and not having to sacrifice the balance (most probably it will even get improved)

Just for a few simple reasons. They want a low CG to say it has a low CG and it does improve handling to a certain extent (how much, I don't know). They also want to keep it N/A for the simple reason that they say it's what it was built to be, and it keep costs down. No matter HOW GOOD any other solution might sound out there, they were NEVER thinking turbo to begin with and it stayed crossed off the list. That makes their final options much more simple in terms of what they could give to the public. They want to be able to tell you that they built it for a certain purpose, and they stuck to that purpose. So that's what we have, and I'm fine with it.

It is a good engine in a Yaris. That does not mean it is a good engine in everything. If there was one catch all engine that would make every car "better" they wouldn't need so many different options.
