I'm also curious about the closed-loop catch can being exempt as well as any stories of people legitimately passing smog with these modifications. In fact, is there anything else that is exempt from smog? |

Can't quote you (thanks forum glitches) but yeah, the MKIV Supra was the first thing that came to mind with its tiny SMIC.
That's a pretty cool list. I'm still curious if anyone has had problems smogging even with legitimate mods. Only question I have now: has anything changed in the smog process that would differ from that list? |

The process is simpler for newer cars that have to smog after eight years. There is a visual inspection and a OBD2 readiness test. That is it.

I do have a question about this new smog law. My car is a 2015 car, but im the 2nd owner, purchased in 2017. Question is, so my first year that i will need to car smogged will be 2023?

Yeah, it'll be sometime then. The law is eight years and newer. I have a 2013 model, so I don't know if it is this year or next year when I'll have to smog my car for the first time. I don't know if it is build date and my car has a newer build date than 2013 or what. If I was going to go straight from the numbers and verbiage then it would seem that the ninth year is the year to smog the car, which looks like this: 2013 (1), 2014 (2), 2015 (3), 2016 (4), 2017 (5), 2018 (6), 2019 (7), 2020 (8) and 2021 (9), so 2021 is the year for me, and 2023 is the year for you.

So your saying regardless of it's used or not our cars have 8 years to be smog free?

I do NOT live in a smog exempt area of California (Santa Rosa), and I have owned and registered my CPO 2013 BRZ since December of 2015, and I have NEVER had to smog my car in the 4+ years of ownership, so unless the DMV messed up, I am fairly certain that it is 8 years regardless. With that said, I am 99.999% certain that a change in ownership requires a smog certificate. As such is the case, if a car was purchased then sold/traded-in after only say 1500 miles, the seller (private party or dealership) would be responsible for smogging the vehicle and providing that to the new owner within 30 days of the sale. The exception to the smog rule for a change in ownership is a transfer/sale of title/ownership to a family member.

That is correct. I am technically the original owner of my car (was purchased under another relatives name due to just barey starting my credit). Had the car transferred into my name and did smog for the transfer of vehicle around this time in 2018. Just had my registration renewed for this year and it did not request for smog this year (would have been 2 years already). Just received my reg papers and sticker with no issue. I assume I will not need to smog until next year (which is 8 years since I have a 2013) then every 2 years after.

i just got my registration again for my 2013 BRZ. I bought it used July of 2017 - it was originally sold and registered May of 2013. Did not have to smog, but i presume I will have to smog next year once it reaches the end of the 8 year abatement.
