How hot is too hot?
Trying to get a feel for realistic intake and water temperatures I should be expecting for a turbocharged application.
I've only recently installed the turbo and have not yet done a track day. Dailly driving the temps seem high but i don't know what to expect.. Worst case I see intake temps +20C over ambient and water temps in the low 100sC (35C day, poor air in traffic). Saw water temps of 107C with short bursts of full revs on a 37C day. At what point do I worry? |

about now I'd say
107 °C is too hot for coolant and you need a high pressure cap to cope with that get a low temp thermostat in there for starters and consider fitting the beatrush undertray |

Thanks. I already have a vented bonnet (hood) and a 1.3 bar cap on the way. Doesn't a low temp thermostat just open earlier?
During the dyno tunes there was a software problem that stopped the fans running and we saw 120C and it didn't spill a drop of coolant or detonation. I guess I'm after some other experiences to judge by. Thinking i might relocate my oil cooler away from in front of the radiator and perhaps open up the air intake with smaller crash bar but only if it's really necessary. |

Sounds like something is wrong if you're hitting temps that high just driving around. Your thermostat and radiator should be coping with just a turbo kit on the street.
Can you give us more details, like what turbo kit? What turbo? Any other systems that tap into the coolant, like an AOS? These are all things that if they are having an issue, or are poorly designed could cause an issue. A local did an install of a Crawford AOS and was furious that the AOS was causing a cooling issue. It was the installation that did, a pinched line severely limited flow.

I probably wouldn’t be revving things out on a hot day like a 37C (98.6F) until you have figured everything out. Either the tune is rich, there is too much resistance in the exhaust system or there is insufficient cooling. The only other possibility is that you are under-reporting how aggressive you are driving and how hot the weather is. The weather could say 37.0 but is the air above the tarmac hotter?

Car is:
Mixture aim table for e85 is attached and the lamba sensor tracks very closely. Temperature compensations (timing retardation) currently kick in at 100C as a precaution. Keen to know more about this.. |

The W2A intercooled turbo has:
- water lines plumbed into the cars water system to cool the body of the turbo. Same for oil. - a dedicated pump, reservoir and radiator for the intake air cooling |

I'm happy to keep working with my tuner to find/identify any issues. What I'm really after is "I have a turbo'd FRS and see stable water temps of XXX in traffic on a hot day and YYY at the track. Intake air temps are ZZZ above ambient"

with that technical spec you should be running a lot colder than you're reporting
either somethings not right ( air lock? faulty Thermostat? blocked rad?) but I'd expect to see coolant down in the 80's deg C |

The crawford AOS install had the lower coolant return running in a pretty long run and there was a kink in it. I think it was limiting enough flow just enough to make it a bit toastier than ideal.

Moving the oil cooler away from in front of the rad will definitely help. Especially now how you are running turbo there will be a lot of very hot air hitting your rad. Best to move it behind the fog light in a similar fashion to the HKS Type S Oil Cooler. From what you have said, this probably isn't the root cause, but it will definitely help to lower those temps regardless. Also, about getting a different crash beam; don't know if you would care, but as soon as you change that in Australia, good luck if you get into an accident an insurers see a different crash beam. Even getting it engineered is impossible. But more importantly, your safety will be significantly compromised. We all love our cars but don't put your own life at risk.

I've yet to see temps over 100C on my car on track. Stock radiator, Trackspec Vents, CSG fan shroud and fans.
IAT has not been more than 14C over ambient, in a ~45 minute lapping session. |
