The GR line is pretty tall not sure it would fit under the hood. You would probably be better off doing an LS swap.

Id say go for it if it'll fit. You'll get rid of that torque dip thats for sure! haha.

HAHA, im already doing an LS swap in my tacoma. not sure i want to spend the extra for an LS swap plus its a "free" motor. Fitment is another concern i believe the 1GRs are taller than the others. would have to do some measurements when the motor is out of my taco.

the 1gr/2gr is too tall need custom oil pan and intake manifold
GR series great torque-y engines

check out www.monkeywrenchracing.com , they know a LOT about the 2GR. it's an amazing engine, with tons of potential. 300hp capable, simply by using a lotus ECU.
MWR is usually dealing with the transverse 2GR-FE

The longitudinal mounted engine is the 2GR-FSE.

They are a little bit different. D4S vs regular port injections, static c/r, head design

The FSE should be a better starting point, on paper. But it's funny, all of the mods/knowledge com from the FE model because it can be swapped into Elises, MR2s, etc

I swapped a 2GRFE into my MR2 Spyder, and it was an amazing setup.

271 rwhp on a bone stock engine other than a lightweight flywheel, open K&N intake, and a decent exhaust (and I included all 3 cats) - this was using a Rav4 ECU. Had a great sound and torque curve.

2GRs are something like 380lbs. Not sure they'd fit in an FRS, they're pretty tall for the FRS hood.

If the 2GR is too tall I would guess the 1GR is as well. Im out of the country at the moment but once I get home next month I will do some measurements and get some rough dimensions to see how much space we are talking about.

I'm sure a good body shop could customize your existing hood to accommodate a taller engine, a LSX just barely clears at the throttle body.

......oooooor you could hack a hole in the hood and stick ITB's right the F*** up through it

Tom's did it with 2GR. They are very similar in size. intake manifold height is the problem but can be fixed. The engine itself isn't too tall. 1GR has rear sump which will foul with the steering rack on the rear of the crossmember unless you REALLY push the engine back in the bay, which can be done with some work behind the firewall to reroute the heater hoses. The front of the uppper oil pan is very shallow, you'd have room to really drop the engine down, and tons of space in front.

Dual runner intake with 2 throttle bodies on front will allow you to eliminate that grossly tall intake manifold, which solves your height problem on that 60* V6

You're going to have to go standalone ECU anyway, why not flex the tuning muscles of any decent standalone? ...

Below is the 1GR, showing the awesome port angle from the head ports. Ditch the vertical lower manifold and shoot the runners straight into the head. Ditch the single, scroll-style intake that sits on top of one of the heads and go dual. Below is a shot of the 3rd rail boostlogic R35 GTR manifold in duplicate. make the manifold as shown on the right, slam it down as close to the valve covers as possible, and run a single overhead fuel rail, or 2 fuel rails staggered and angled. The advantage is you can get a perfect straight shot at the back of the valve.

Runnners should end in bellhorns if you have the time and money. Either way, match the port diameter to the runner diameter and reduce the plenum volume for NA. For FI, increase the plenum volume and run larger diameter runners, tapered if budget permits.

The below picture won't work perfect - the runners are going to have to be angled longitudinally slightly because the 1GR ports aren't staggered far enough.

I have been thinking about the 2GR-FSE once the car is paid off and i have something else to drive. Check out this boosted one that Blitz did.

There is also the new 8AR-FTS which is the 2.0T that is coming out in the IS200t. 241hp and 258 ft lbs stock and it makes that torque from 1650-4000 rpms. With a little tuning and free flowing exhaust and downpipe that would be an interesting setup. Maybe Tom's will build a demo car with one in it.
