As ugly as this concept is. The proposed mechanicals make a lot of sense. This is a sneak peak at what's to come in the 2nd generation.

Electric motor - dat torque
Gas motor - Extends range
Hybrid transmission - 1 transmission for all cars
Targa top - Steals some of the competition's buyers
Battery in floor - low cg (perhaps even lower than the current 86)

Loss of back seat is likely for the concept only as I would imagine they're still engineering the electronics and battery systems to fit inside an equal sized platform.

Much of this has been hinted at by Tadasan over the years. Even removing the boxer shaped 86 piston badge from the fenders, and boxer logo from the intake was to start to move the 86 brand away from any horizontally opposed legacy to mean something else.

Subaru provides an updated ZN/ZC chassis, Toyota all the hybrid systems. Win/win for both companies.

I didn't even notice the hood the first time I saw the concept. It would be really cool to have an OEM hood that is already vented from the factory. Looks like it would bolt right up to our cars assuming it ends up being produced.

Yes, although it is a hybrid and only a two seater so maybe there will still be a place for the 86. At least, there are 100K twins (triplets) running around so if I want one to replace my 2ZZ Spyder someday, they will be easy to come by.

Those funny PRND buttons, funky lights ... looks like a Civic Type R wannabe 86. I will just hang tight with my FR-S.

Not gonna lie, thought it was ugly at first, but each time I look at it the thing grows on me, weird lights and all. I know I should hate it but there's something cool about it

I loved the targa top in my old Del Sol. I'm wondering where the top gets stored in this concept though? Behind the seats? Did I miss it somewhere in the pictures?

Summers are a few months, not to mention 20+ hours of sunshine. Its spring and fall that are just 2 weeks long...

Will be interesting to see if they can keep the weight around 2800 lbs in hybrid guise.

LOL. I know. It just isn't often I get to move the cold stereotype up from me so I take any opportunity that arises.
