Any price increase beyond $1000-1500 is idiotic as it will overlap too much with the 4 cylinder Supra.

If they make the car that people are asking for then it is all idiotic and will overlap the Supra.

4cyl Supra with 4 seats and a manual? That might not be the worst thing.

There simply is not room for two similarly spec'd and priced cars from the same company no matter how many seats.

And who said you will get a MT?

I don't understand this whole "can't overlap" anyway. It took me two clicks on the Chevrolet website to build a Camaro that was more expensive than a C8. (ZL1 + Performance Pack).

It's only when you have this "one option fits all" thing they have with the 86 you run into this. Does Toyota or Subaru sell any other car that has one standard trim?

The MR2, Celica, and Supra had a ton of price overlap back in the day. Just because the price overlaps doesn’t mean other features of the car do. If you want 2 seats, get the Supra, if you want a manual, get the 86.

I believe the only reason the Supra doesn’t have a manual yet is because BMW doesn’t want to do the legwork to put a manual behind the B58. I’m confident the next 86 will have a manual.

This is not "the day".
The day you are referencing ended with tribal graphics and underglow.
There has been no room for overlap in many years now and the required gap just got wider.

The bazillion base Camaros sold allow for there to be one that has a price overlap with the 'Vette.
This will not work when you are talking two very niche cars.
When they sell the 86 in the same numbers as Camaros then yes they could afford to have a version optioned up to the price of the Supra.
The reality is that they are not generally in the same price point.

Ok, that makes sense, but I was really thinking about it from a different angle. I was thinking more from the if they weren't trying to make it a low volume niche car that could do better.

Mind you I now Camaro is at risk based on current sales and may be (temporarily) dead before a new model comes out.

Ya that is just it though. Both the 86 and the Supra are very low volume niche cars. There is no market room for them to cross over with each other.
Beyond a bunch of internet car geeks both are virtually unknown. Hell, I have managed to confuse the hell out of 99% of the people at work just by changing colours! People that didn't bat an eye at the FRS are now making the old "wish I had your money" with the new one. Trying to explain it is just a newer version of the same inexpensive car is becoming a bore.

And that is sort of the irony of the situation. If they wanted to sell scads of them they would need to advertise the car and the price. Advertising costs shitloads of money so they would have to sell many, many more of them to make it worthwhile. They don't want to sell them in volume so they don't advertise or push the price so people believe they are expensive.

Imo they could update the performance to miata levels, do some interior tweaks and keep selling this car. I dont see how they make something that fits between present design and the supra.
