Mandatory Fine for Modified Exhaust Systems

Anyone get pulled over yet? Fine up to $1k with mandatory ref and court appearance. Saw a vid on IG, 370z female owner pulled over.

I have thought about it. The only thing keeping me from doing is my set up is quite. Borla ULE, Invidia over pipe, Berk Front Pipe, and Invidia Q300 exhaust.

its interesting to sat the least. what i saw was that its to get rid of "excessively loud exhaust" (which would include motorcycles.) i do agree with that part but "excessive" is highly subjective as we all know.



I still have no plans to change my exhaust setup in the future. we shall see how it's enforced.

Blame the retards at the street take over things. I have a passion for hate for those idiots. If exhaust enforcement gets even stricter, that's the last straw for me. As soon as I'm done with school, I'm gonna move states. The people and laws in this state are getting shittier and shittier. No wonder why the rest of the U.S. hates California.

I guess there is some petition going around. I'm not totally sure what the end goal of the petition is. But if Californians want a referendum vote on this we will need 600,000+ signatures to trigger a state wide vote.

No more fix it tickets for loud exhaust. Now you pay the expensive fine and have to fix it. Also, people have been saying that the enforcement got stricter since the new year. Hopefully that calms down though.

No law changed. They added a law which is phrased along the lines of.... if a cop thinks, assumes or suspects your "exhaust" to be modified. They can pull you over and give you a ticket. The language is vague and just states exhaust is not allowed to be modified.

If it is modified there is a mandatory fee of $1000.

Look at the video link of the girl being ticketed. The officer does a good job at describing the law.

It's a vague blanket law which gives officers too much discretion to discriminate.

Here is an example:

An officer is used to seeing stock 86's all day. But if he sees a brz with the subaru sti axleback or an 86 with the trd catback he can pull you over because your exhaust is modified. whether he knows its a factory/dealer modification or not he has the discretion to write you a ticket because technically your exhaust is modified in his eye.

Normally this could be fought or a fix it ticket would be issued. But under this law if he gives you a ticket with the new law code there is a mandatory $1000 fee the court must issue. The new law also states that no fixing it is required and that no sound testing is required on the part of the officer and on the part of the cars driver.

So it's not only vague but it also adds a very heavy fine for something that could be erroneously ticketed for.

The reasoning can also include the officers sound and smell senses. So if you're on a trd catback and rev too high or are going through a tunnel and he thinks your car sounds louder than the average stock 86 you can get pulled over and ticketed. If you are in traffic and the 1960's muscle car a few cars ahead of you has an exhaust smell that is heavy with notes of unburned gasoline the cop can assume its coming from your 86 with a widebody or the evo next to you with the big wing and automatically pull you over and cite you for an unproven modified exhaust with a mandatory $1000 fee.

I hope that helps clear up how broad the law can be applied.

The video was posted prior to 2019 of the law taking effect. Original video posted 12/22/18. I don't think this can be used as a reference in terms of the new law, which only changes a correctable offense to a non-correctable. I don't think its a mandatory fee of $1000 because the fee for an inadequate muffler is ~$200 and for a loud exhaust is ~$200 as well without correction (last I checked). If it's about $1000, I will be assuming they got caught for more than loud exhaust or inadequate muffler.

Since we're talking about 2019 CA laws; I just wanted to mention the no-smog required period for new cars has jumped from 6-years to 8-years now.

Is this still applicable only to the 6 model year or less? Meaning our 2013 FRS/BRZ do not need SMOG until 2021?
