2019 Special Edition BRZ, any ideas???
So, with the news of the Series.Gray WRX’s and STi’s what are the chances of the 2019 Special Edition BRZ being a Series.Gray too? https://www.autoblog.com/2018/06/04/2019-subaru-wrx-and-wrx-sti-series-gray-revealed-look-a-bit-blu/#slide-7346253 |

If Subaru keeps doing special editions in grey they will soon have 50 shades of it.

If they use that color, they should call it Series.Boring or Series.Invisible. Here's what it will look like in the rain:

Are there any news in general about the 2019 BRZ's? We are already in June and still no news. What I've seen in Japan is that they don't offer the RA Racing trim anymore! Are they abandoning the platform or what?

I was actually talking to a friend about this yesterday. Part of me thinks they may just give us low-volume tS trims for next year, and maybe through the end of this generation. Historically, I think Subaru has debuted all of the performance special editions in one event (Hyper Blue, tS/RA, and [really pulling from memory on this one] Series.Blue/Launch Edition, as examples). Series.Yellow only debuted on the BRZ and remained that way for the model year, and perhaps Series.Gray will do the same.
Of course, we also joked about how I pray Series.Gray does not appear on the 2019. As it's all preferential, I absolutely love that color and it would potentially have me making bad financial decisions, haha. Edit: It stinks, because my last chunk of Drive Performance magazines in the mail have on the back cover the "next issue" bits. One of the items is the 2019 BRZ. As it's the most up-in-the-air model, I'm always curious to see what they do with each iteration. |

I am not sure. Current model is already on its 6th production year revision (model F). Either they will discontinue the BRZ or they are preparing already to manufacture the new one. I highly doubt the latter, we would have seen some spy photos ... |

It's definitely discontinued. The lack of news proves it.

Here's that little snippet. Of course, anything can change. Maybe they will use that image of yours, extrashaky, to debut the '19. Or, maybe 2019 will see the release of the Final/Farewell/Last Edition and they go full on Huawei P20 Pro on us. |

There won't be a farewell edition. At some point during the year the BRZ will simply disappear off the Subaru website, and there will be a press release about another vehicle (probably the WRX) with a quiet paragraph near the end vaguely mentioning the end of the BRZ as if it happened some time in the distant past. Astute Subaru fanboys and insiders might also notice a seemingly unrelated rumor of a Subaru executive throwing himself off a building to preserve his honor.

As I've said before, I really don't think there will be a new generation of BRZ's. U.S. Sales of BRZ through the first 5 months has been the lowest in history at 1650 total cars vs. 1868 last year. What makes it worse, is that 86 sales has really dropped from 2831 last year to 1907 this year. Obviously, Toyota has already made their decision to drop the 86 because of lack of support and the fact that they didn't update the 18 model in terms of navigation and interior quality. It makes sense for Toyota as they are preparing the Supra. They don't need more than one sports car and the Supra will not be made by Subaru. From a service perspective, why should Toyota continue to support the Subaru engine in terms of training and parts?
I do think Subaru will continue to produce the BRZ and 86 as long as they have enough sales to make it profitable. But the current volume does not warrant the investment in a new generation in terms of tooling, design, and parts. There might be a 2019 model, but it won't be much different than the 18. They've tried the tS model and that hasn't sold well, so tricking the public to buy a much more expensive car without a significant improvement in performance just didn't work. Mazda has added 26hp to the Miata for 2019 to enhance sales, but they aren't looking at a new generation either. And they aren't charging more for that 26hp -- a real performance improvement. Subaru could extend sales by doing the same as Mazda, but I just don't see that they can squeeze out another 30-40 hp without a turbo. And if they add a turbo, the cost will increase -- especially as volume decreases. Remember that there are economies of scale and as volume lowers, margins decrease. I knew, when I purchased my new 18 BRZ, that this was going to be the case. But what the hell -- I'm just a small minority of people who happen to like this car. In fact, while I've only had the car for a month, I've had no less than 5 people come up to me and ask about the car, saying that it is really good looking and they had never heard of it. I'm a car nut, and until last year when I decided to get another sports car, I hadn't heard much about the car. The fact that it was a Subaru actually was a negative, not a positive, because Subaru is known for all wheel drive vehicles. What could they possibly know about making a sports car???? |

I just noticed a new release of Techstream which adds support for all the 2019 models... Thought is was odd that all but the 86 are on the list.... hmmm:

Both the president of toyota Europe and president of Fuji heavy industries confirmed there is going to be a second generation, there are no significant improvements because at this point it doesn't make sense to invest in the current generation when you're in the main part of product development if a 2021 release is correct. So in August or September the brz/86 will be sold as a 2019 but virtually unchanged from 2018.
