Maybe this was just my car, but the OEM mic sucked. My new radio has a mic built into the front, and works 10x better than the OEM one. People can actually hear me now.

Could just be my car though.

I didn't try to use the oem with my pioneer, but I did put the pioneer mic in the oem spot right behind the overhead light.

Do you have a pic of your placement? I'm interested in doing this same thing or using the factory mic.

if you want to reuse the mic, you need to solder the wires to a 3.5mm jack cable.. the mic only has 3 wires which is the same color code as the ones in the 3.5 jack cable.. one issue that i did find using the mic from the radio i bough is that it will catch noise from the road cuz the roof has no padding when its placed in the OEM mic location.. its not sealed as the OEM mic, ill take pictures later so you can see what i mean.. i might just use the OEM mic for my radio

Speaking from experience, using the supplied mic from my HU sounds like ass. It's as phenom86 said, there is no material to shield it from the roof vibration noise. I will eventually get around to trying this out once I get some free time over a weekend.
