Like father, like son. 2017 series.yellow and 2018 tS

I went to school for car design from 2000-2004. In 2003, Toyota sponsored our senior thesis, and I proposed a modern day 86, which went over extremely well. (here's one of the original ideation sketches for my 86 proposal.)

In 2017, my dad was looking for a car to replace his 2004 Chrysler Crossfire 6-speed. I had recommended an 86 twin, and wanting to make sure his was special, he reserved a series.yellow BRZ when it was announced, and picked it up during the week of his 68th birthday. It was the first one sold in Wisconsin.
Since I'm a wheel designer, he picked up some Rotiform KPS (my design) as summer wheels, and installed them with Michelin Pilot Sports.

That October, I was planning a trip to Japan, and asked if he wanted to come along. I rented a new Toyota 86 while there, and after driving it to numerous touge around Japan, fell in love with it, and knew I had to get one.

I had a very comfortable budget to work with, so I wanted the best example of an 86 twin I could get. I purchased my Crystal black Silica tS one year and two weeks after my dad got his series.yellow. I got it in black to match the 86 I rented in Japan, so every time I looked at it, I'd remember the trip we went on together.

This thread will cover both cars as we mod and drive them.

Series.Yellow mod list
Rotiform KPS, 18x8.5 +35
Michelin Pilot SuperSport 225/40-18

tS mod list

JDM exhaust tips
JDM marker lights
Subaru rear diffuser
JDM TRD side aero panels
JDM TRD rear aero panel
JDM STI kouki fender garnishes
Rays engineering Duranuts (red)
Grimmspeed license plate mount
JDM STI oil cap
Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 225/40-18
Tein Flex A Coilovers with hydraulic bumpstops
Tein EDFC Active Pro with GPS
Endless SS-Y brake pads
Rotiform KPS 18x9.5 +35 (+32 corrected) in custom Sandstorm Champagne with Red/Gold caps
JDM TRD fender extensions (color-matched)

First update:
Yesterday, it warmed up enough for my dad to install the birthday and Christmas gifts I got him. JDM zenki tS fender garnishes and TRD side aero panels.
The stock wheels with snow tires are being run in this shot.
When we went to Japan, we really liked the TRD side pieces we saw at MegaWeb in Odaiba, so bought them for each other's cars. I still need to paint mine a contrasting color before installation.

That's cool that you can connect with your dad like that over cars. My dad also lives in WI and I'm in California! He bought a MR2 Spyder several years ago that I've purchased a bunch of mods for, and he's gotten a few for my twin over the years as well.

Subscribed for the father son angle. My son and I have been enjoying a miata for a year or so together. Can't wait to take both kids out in the BRZ.

Awesome work on the Rotiform KPS. First time I have seen them on a BRZ. Very nice looking.

Very minor updates, but I've ordered some parts, now I just need to wait for them to come from Japan.

My dad installed his summer wheel and tire setup:

And my custom plates finally came:

Awesome story. Would love to convince my dad to get an 86 or BRZ after reading this.

Since my dad got his TRD aero panels on, it was finally my tS's turn.
Usually they're meant to be a contrasting black, but since my car is black, I had to get creative. I installed a matching pair of JDM BRZ STI sport fender garnishes at the same time.
I think this is the first time I've ever seen the TRD aero panels in a color other than black.

I tracked the tS for the first time today. It really reminds me of my AE86.
It really shined in the corners, and the handling of the tS was a lot less prone to understeer than I thought it would be.
I did get absolutely slaughtered on the high speed oval sections by anything that wasn't a Miata or 86 however.
