We're almost ready to paint the cage. Finishing up some body prep, we're going to shoot the whole thing with the same color as the exterior.
Here you can see how the removable dash bar allows us to pull the HVAC system without much work: Here's the dashbar out of the car, showing the prototype brackets made from the OEM dash bar. We'll be using a mixture of salvaged brackets and custom laser-cut brackets in the production cage. We also reinforced the Cool Shirt mount in the back, since it had been a little too flexy in previous form: Should be going to paint by the end of the week. |

whoa this look awesome !!!
I am glad to see the final 'dash bar' I was hoping something less involved would allow to mount the steering columns but I see that it is quite a custom solution. Interesting solution to keep the side piece of the dash bar, bolted to the side, so that you can still attach the dashboard to them. VERY CLEVER setup. This is the best setup I have seen by far. - keeping AC functional - keeping full door and electric windows - tight clearance ... curious to see how much the kit will sell for ???

I would expect a group buy for the first run. Buy-in for something like this will be fairly steep, so we'll need some buyers lined up for the first run. Tooling costs for the CNC bender are significant.
The steering wheel mount will be much simpler on the production kit. We'll also have an option to eliminate that forward mounting point to eliminate any hassle with inspectors considering it a cage attachment point. |

All ready for paint! We'll have to wait in line a little bit for the body shop down the road to get to us, but the cage is done. Couldn't resist signing the hoop supports in the rear, too. |

Congrats! It looks awesome.
When I see the level of preparation you have done before sending to paint, I think a couple more shots of the work done to cleanup/prep all floor surface would help the whoa factor

I'm in the process of having a custom cage built. I've completely stripped the car, like yours. I was planning on having a dash bar installed, and leaving the oem bar to keep the mounting points. What are you thoughts on this? Worth it or is it better to relocated the mounts?
Thanks! |

@crazyfrenchbiker, you can check my thread:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showt...t=71806&page=3 you will see some photo of my cage with knee bar and also the stock bar. I think @GSpeed method is better, if you can pull it off. It will be tricky and time consuming to replicate the mounting point and do it right. My 2 cents is that the OEM dash bar is pretty sturdy and tighly bolted to the chassis, so it may be even better than the roll bar in terms of rigidity considering the roll cage is not bolted to the chassis. I'd say both are equivalent, but because of convenience, I think OEM bar is the way to go for the small guys. It would be great is gspeed could share some eventual graph of the cage with the poem dash mount and with the knee bar. In my case the HVAC control has to be 'customized' to make the knee bar fit. As the HVAC system really fit the OEM dash bar really snug.

A professional fabricator shouldn't have any issues doing a dash bar like ours if you tell them to just reuse the brackets off the OEM dash bar. Mounting steering to the dash bar is somewhat common, we've done that on some BMWs too. |
