It doesn't help that roads haven't kept up.
Even the twistiest road becomes a chore when it's bumper to bumper...

But that's a whole other issue.

I feel much more connected to the road and the car with a manual. When I do drive an automatic, I really miss my manual gearbox....

FYI the clutch is hydraulic just like most cars built in the last 40 years, not 'fly-by-wire' which implies an electronically actuated system like the throttle. But that doesn't change how you feel about it, sounds like you made the right call for yourself.

Oh. Right. Thank you. That's what I meant. :-)
It's not my first hydraulic clutch, but it IS my first without a throttle cable. I wanted so badly to like it, but the fun just wasn't there. I'm already pining for another Fiat/Lancia/Alfa, so hopefully I will be thrashing another happy little Italian inline-four in the not-too-distant future. Between the two choices I was given in the FR-S, I just had to take the automatic. :-(

Sorry but I won't buy a MT car again. My last was a then new MR2T which I always walk with a limb after a long drive sloughing through LA's parking lot freeways.

I definitely echo the sentiment about paying extra for a DCT type but so far the AT on my BRZ is outstanding. I go through 3 modes on my daily 40 mile commute. It is left in D in mindless freeway, switched to manual shift in the canyons and then progress through paddle shift on the last part when the curves gets tighter.

The ONLY issue I have with the AT is when I forget I'm still in manual shift mode, the road straightened out and I can't hear the engine because my music is too loud. The only clue is when the car doesn't move any faster and I realize I'm bouncing off the redline. I need to fix the shift light thingy.

You may want to do some math to get a better 'picture':

X divided by Y times 100 equals Z - percentage of manual transmissions per year.

X/Y x 100 = Z

Given:
Y equals the number of cars manufactured per year.
X equals the number of manual transmissions sold with
1. All cars, OR
2. With just the FR-S/BRZ the car.
Z equals percentage of manual transmission sold per year.

UPDATE:
2013 total production for the BRZ (automatic and manual): 8000 vehicles (X,2). A generous estimate.
World production (2012): 84,000,000 (Y)

8000 divided by 84,00000 x 100 = 0.009 % That's about one one hundredth of one per cent the amount of manual transmissions of BRZ vs the world. and less if brz automatics are not included in the math. So "70%" don't mean much more than one titmouse dropping.

not really saying MT is better than AT here.
but to note that we, as enthusiasts, showed the manufacturers that there are still market for MT option.

The 6MTs don't have freakin hill assist do they?
My Camaro made me feel like a noob all over again. The hill assist on that car sucks horribly and I wish it death.

Honestly I should get the auto since my knee locks if I push the clutch in all the way then it has to pop to bend again which hurts (had surgery on it) buuutttt when test driving the auto it sucked.. I've owned one automatic and that was my Audi I traded for the Camaro. It wasn't bad... But I missed the clutch.

Yes sir! I used to hide my keys when I left for a few days. Now I just let them sit on the dresser without any concerns.

Nope, you just have a clutch with a ridiculously unintuitive bite point. I have terrible knees as well and can fully operate the clutch using only my ankle. Car being the first manual I've owned doesn't help either.

Ideally, you should set your seat position so that your knee isn't locked when you have the clutch fully depressed. If your knee is fully straightening out when using the clutch, you should move the seat a bit closer.

I came here to say this, but I see it has been said.
