I removed my 3rd brake light entirely after I failed to stop the rattling with complete disassembling and adding silicone sealant every friggin part. I reupholstered the deck with foam and vinyl to go over all the holes and to match the car. It looks great. The annoying rattle is reduced 70%, but oddly enough the soft vinyl gives a low grade rattle against the glass now with certain bass notes. I am going to add a small black weather strip between the two and see what happens. These trunk rattles are insane to get rid of completely.

I have the Mustang high mount light that has been mentioned in other posts on the way (being delivered tomorrow) . I actually left the holes unplugged, and put two 3" holes in the stock deck so I could get more sound through from the trunk. I can notice a difference in the sound. I just used a hot glue gun to secure the new fabric. I also left the car seat latches as I have a baby about due, otherwise I would have covered them.

That was actually why I was asking, I plan to do the high mounted light soon and don't really want the holes there.

Grats on the kiddo though.

I have just removed my shelf with the help of the posts in this thread and here are my notes which complement.

See the links which have photos. ALSO scroll down for info re a "hook" on the underside of the shelf, directly below the "space ship" that hooks under the metal.
It is NOT necessary to remove trim panels.

For future use I have made slits in the edge of the shelf DIRECTLY opposite the clips. They are virtually invisible and will normally be concealed behind the rear seat rests. These are for insertion of a clip-release tool ,but note the clips will tend to pop back so slip something in under the edge to keep it raised. I found slipping my slender hand under the shelf difficult.

Put a newspaper against the glass to protect the heater wires.
Fold the rear seatbacks forward and remove the 4 black clips along the edge of the shelf.
There are 4 white clips in a line, about 50mm in from the rear edge and about 40cm apart. The tips of the clips are visible from up in the boot.

Go along the edge of the shelf and gently bend it up. . Lift the RH end and push you hand in to locate the clip about 30mm in from the end. Using the panel clip remover, slide it up and under the panel from the front and feel around until the tool gets ahold of the clip. Pop out the clips, but note that they are going to want to snap back into the hole due to the pressure of the panel being stretched into place so stuff something in to hold it up .
When all 4 clips are popped, pull the centre forward enough to release the hook in the metal below the space ship. At each end of the shelf there is a tab with a hole in it. The tab goes along underneath the plastic trim and the hole locates UP to a protrusion in the trim. While pushing down on the extreme end of the shelf to release at the hole, pull the end of the shelf forward.Do the other end and remove the shelf.

If you are going to cover the shelf e.g. by laying felt over it to conceal holes after removing the space ship, you might even consider having it in 2 pieces by cutting the felt in half, fore-to-aft, along the centre-line to make it very easy to fit the ends under the plastic trim.

removing trim which is not necessary.

For whatever reason i'm having a hard time getting the plastic C-Pillar cover off. In your picture it's zoomed in quite a bit and i'm not sure what angle your getting at it at. Do you pry it off from the bottom or more from the side?

Edit: I noticed OP didn't mention anything about disconnecting the battery before working near the C-Pillar airbags. Is there a possibility of setting them off working near it?

That's a good question and I remember discussing it on other threads possibly on other car forums a while ago... I can't remember the exact consensus but I believe it was considered generally safe to leave it connected for two reasons- A: a very specific event is required to set them off from a sensor, simply exposing the device and bumping it with your hand is a non-issue, and B: we're not disconnecting them. If we were disconnecting or replacing them (such as with a steering wheel swap or something) it was a different story and the battery should be disconnected.

That being said, it's still an "at your own risk" endeavor, so if you choose to disconnect the battery, it's still a "best practices" thing, and at the very minimum you have the peace of mind.

This is all wrong no reason to remove the side air bag panels, drop the back seat remove the 4 plastic clips & lift the rear parcel shelf from the middle to remove.
