Yea, stereos and speakers were giant pieces of furniture back in the day. Magnets were huge and heavy. I want something I can mount on the wall. I don't want them taking garage floor space.

It has nothing to do with stopping people from messing with them since the tools have been readily available as long as the bolts have existed.
Oh, OK - I stand corrected -

The whole thing goes down to time to build since time is indeed money when you are building cars. The cycle time for assembly lines averages around 70 seconds per task so anything that makes it faster is good. Cars are designed to be built fast and cheap and other than the common service parts they are NOT designed to be easily taken apart again. Seats are not expected to be removed so they use the Torx for speed and strength. This means they go in really easy but are a total bitch to get back out again.
If they really wanted to make them tamper proof there are one way bolts that are truly a problem to remove.

on-wall is THE worst possible way to set up speakers...

Also, proper speakers are still big. No replacement for displacement, you know?

in-wall is tough to find quality, but is a great option for your desires.

Or, get beautiful stuff...
