what about all the motorcycles like harleys and muscle cars that are loud. I never see them get hassled by cops for being loud. Yes they get pulled for driving fast and being dumb, but not for just being loud..

Are there any headers and high flow cat's out there that are Cali friendly? I want to put a little extra GO in my car. I do not want a super loud exhaust, and I really do not want cop hassle for mods.

Any suggestions? I am thinking Borla headers and down pipe and keeping my TRD exhaust on it.

I've received 2 tickets for my exhaust by Florida Highway Patrol. Local PD doesn't care as much but FHP will get you if they can.

Warning for California Tuners' with loud exhaust

Had same exact setup with Innovate supercharger (loudest SC available) -- straight pipe, UEL, and Tomei 80.

Lasted about a week before I took the Tomei 80 and straight pipe off -- the sound literally whipped through the air and people could hear me about a mile away LOL. Yeah, never again.

Now with Greddy Turbo, HKS Dual Resonated FP, and Greddy Speed Master catback it is much quieter. (:

I live on the other side of the country, but law enforcement folks are law enforcement folks. Their job is to enforce the law. They don't make the laws, they enforce them. If they pull you over for an infraction and DON'T give you a ticket, they're extending you a pretty significant favor. If they do what they're supposed to do and give you a ticket, they're just doing their job. That hardly makes them "assholes" or "****s" or whatever expletives have been hurled at them in this thread. The OP broke the law, got a ticket, then complained that the process to make that rightfully-earned ticket go away was difficult. Ummm... good? If it was easy to make the ticket go away, what's the point of the law in the first place? I know.. that's another discussion... but until the law is changed, you can't hate the police for enforcing it.

Just my piddlin' opinion.

If you get a ticket for excessive noise violation, it is not a fix-it ticket no matter how much you try. You can't just put it back to stock and have it written off.

Law enforcement officers are not in the business of verifying compliance, that's what BAR is for.

Thanks for posting btw. What you went through sounds like a huge headache. I cant imagine having to take all that time off work running around trying to figure out the process simply because you couldn't get a straight answer from those involved.

It's been like this for the past 10 years... the requirement for BAR to check your exhaust was put in place before 2005.

the process started in 2001. I actually was one of the people who helped provide SEMA with documentation on exhaust systems when they requested it to SEMA Members who are within California and wanted more information on exhaust systems.

If you live in CA just use your best judgement and know that ANYTHING you do to your car will give them a reason to pull you over, the cops here are not a-holes at all, some people are just not very lucky in regards to modifications and law enforcement. If you think it's too loud (be reasonable) than it probably is going to get you that unwanted attention bottom line. I've been pulled over fully catless+tomei 60s and the cop said its just a tad too loud for his taste, FOR HIS TASTE, every person is different, hell you might even get a thumbs up from an officer you never know.

But that's just it, it's not law enforcement's responsibility to tell you what the fix is.

The citation clearly states what VC is being violated, and a simple Google search can turn up results on how to remedy it. As a general rule, if a citation has the "Correctable Violation" box checked, it can be fixed and signed off by any peace officer. Otherwise, it must be subject to the correction method(s) outlined in the CVC or a judicial clerk won't accept it.
