Why the hell don't we have this re flash in the USA? Seriously.

I am thinking we should all call our manufacturers tomorrow and let them know we are aware of the issue and want to know why we are not being given the most recent ecu update. Who is with me?

can someone else pull the same data as sithspawn who has already had the ECU TSB performed? that would put a lot our minds at rest that our cars are not detonating whenever we accelerate hard > <

It sounds like ball bearings dropping into a metal pan. You won't necessarily hear it without specialist equipment, however I have heard this transient det from inside the car without any equipment!

It's worth noting though, transient det is usually in low load condition and is not typically considered problematic (a lot of older MAP sensor based cars use to suffer from it), but on this direct injection engine it's obviously an issue.

Assuming this is the source of the problem indeed, I would not be happy with just a new tune to correct the problem. I would want new injectors as well because they could be damaged from all the driving done with the bad tune.

Sent an email to Toyota and Scion regarding this issue. Linked all the threads on this topic in the body of the email. We'll see what comes back.

To to OP:
I would bring them the TSB regarding the issue if you have not already. The issue is known by the manufacturer as other markets have been given the fix for it. I would consider using the TSB to your advantage here. At least to get more of a break down so they can see it was an injector issue.

FYI, I just edited my Transient table, flashed the ECU and did a log. Bye bye detonation.

wouldn't be cool if you could take you subie to a Toyota dealer. They fix your car then they bill Subaru.

Why would the detonation occur when you lift off the throttle to shift? Normally detonation occurs at WOT when the mixture leans out due to more air flow than fuel. I would think at lift you would get a surge of residual fuel as the air flow is being shut off.

Yes, I am aware that other factors such as heat can also cause detonation. I am just looking for a confirmation as to why it is happening like you say it is.

The engine is designed and tuned for 93 and higher. 91 is really a temporary measure until you can get the right fuel and I would drive it with that in mind and not wind it out on 91. It's been mentioned the engine even rattles on 91 at times. Add ethanol into the equation and i'm not surprised that engines are shitting themselves.
So question guys, what should i do. i have crappy 90 octane e10 fuel should i be worried .

i have noticed i am not getting close to the fuel mileage u guys are getting i'm wondering if its because of the fuel?

Looks to me like the detonation is happening at the point where we're stepping back on the throttle after the shift, not as we lift. Which would make sense.

You can see the ignition advance spike up and back down, that's where his foot is off the throttle. The detonation spike appears to be just slightly after that. This is why I say it's happening on the throttle opening right after the shift.

Makes sense. Toyota's TSB said the shift has to be completed within .6 seconds for the detonation to occur, so that tells me that it's the act of getting back on the throttle (aka, completing the shift) in that timeframe.
