And the sound is always off during acceleration because the sound never sounds like an increase in revolution, it just sounds like the baseline noise that has been distorted to match the increase in revolution...almost like just raising the volume and making it louder.

Can the car manufacturers replicate it more successfully?

it's an interesting parallel. IMO, car makers tend to have more 'real' inputs at their disposal. part of the constant struggle with video game sound has always been the perception of speed and vehicle dynamics.
