Were they possibly cutting corners at the expense of safety? Skipping a proper harness/cage for a lower weight. I don't think there would be tech. Seems like with a budget like TRD they would rent out the track for their own private use and just run.

Haha you sir have a good point... but at least TRD “should” worry bout the driver’s safety

Don't screw around with this. If you ever find yourself heading toward a fixed object, you'll be glad you read the directions.
Might of strayed off track but still good info everyone needs to read.

This isn't a US vs Japan thing....Takata themselves say not to mount a harness that way. Looks like it doesn't fit the JAF rules from the pdf you posted either.

This is exactly what pisses me off about that car (and other's like it). Yes it's got some really interesting engineering and looks really cool. But it is clearly unsafe (regardless of rules) and doesn't follow any recommended safety guidelines anyway (US or Japan). But...it's TRD/Toyota so most just assume that it's okay. People will defend it because they think such a big name couldn't possibly do something wrong. And they'll copy it because they saw it on Speedhunters and put themselves in danger. So much of what you see at the track is people copying other people that look like they know what they're doing. That's usually fine, but in this case it's very bad.

Anyway, build a light car but budget a few pounds in for reasonable safety equipment. Sorry for threadjack and rant.

Yup, you're right, I'm wrong. Just read the JAF guid (section 4.1 page 49), it does state not recommended harness position.

Thanks

So does anyone knows how much a carbon door usually weights and how much a OEM door weights? This might be the first thing I do when the car becomes a trailer car if the gains in weight reduction are half as impressive as people say they are.

I just weighed my factory doors yesterday. They are heavy AF at just a few ounces under 50 lbs without regulators or glass. Shooting for around 5 lbs each with the carbon pair I'll be making. I have factory front and rear glass out, as well as the trunk and hood off. I'll throw those on the scale tomorrow and report back. The roof will be off in a couple of weeks, so I'll let you guys know on that as well.

Also of note, I stripped out all of the unnecessary brackets and other sheet metal from the inside of the chassis, and there isn't much to be gained there in weight loss. I took 8 lbs 9 oz out. Spare tire well seems pretty beefy, so maybe that will be a good chunk out once it gets chopped.

Does anyone have an accurate weight on the rear subframe?

Thanks a lot, this is gold info right here. I stripped the back of the car including all the brackets (seats, seatbelts and what not) and the brackets were a little under 10lbs so same as your experience. Thanks again for the info on the doors, and if you can weight in the rest that would be awesome and me (and probably a bunch others) will love you forever

I remember my Minibusa days, 242hp at the wheels, 1140 lbs with me in it, 0 to 60 in 2.5. I wish I was rich I would love to build a super light track only FRS just for the fun of it.

Here is my list so far. I've been weighing everything asI take it out, so hopefully this info is useful to someone.

Headliner 3lb. 5oz
Trunk w/hinges 20lb 7.5oz
Rear glass 14lb 7oz
Windshield 25 lb 11.5oz
Front Door (each) 49 lb. 8.5 oz.
Door Glass (each) 7 lb. 13 oz.
Window regulator (each) 3 lb. 2.5 oz
Rear seat upper 14 lb 6.5 oz
Rear seat lower (each) 4lb 10oz
Steering linkage (rack-eps) 4 lb. 10 oz.
Eps unit with key tumbler and tilt 29 lb. 14 oz.

That's it for now. I'll continue to document as I keep pulling the chassis apart, especially when I get to individual suspension components.

What are you using in place of stock steering?
