Problems with detailing

Right. I'm convinced Toyota dealerships are doing something a bit wrong here. Having seen Satin White Pearl examples in Japan, I'm wondering why on earth some of the local cars seem to be gloss-- the paint code is the same. Could this be done wrong when the car is detailed?

The only reason I ordered the white is because I wanted that milky-quartz satin pearl. Anybody with one in Australia happy to do a shot where these cars don't get detailed, say under the boot or whatever, with plenty of light? Maybe someone who got one in pearl care to doublecheck their paint code?

If they're just fucking it up that's fine, I'll tell them not to detail the paint. If it's the local colour I might as well go to silver.

Hey mate, this seems very unsual to me, have you seen them in person appearing to be just a gloss white without the pearl? or just in pictures, cause it can be deceptive on a below par camera.

The only reason a pearl would look like a gloss is maybe a bizarre lighting arrangement or its covered in Bird shyt, i cant imagine them doing anything at the dealer to mask the pearl intentionally or un-intentionally

They retain the -pearl- aspect, but the satin isn't right. If you get a look at a Jap-spec they've got a dull, chalkboard finish in highlights, and the lowlights are the normal see-through pearl. This is the look that attracted me in the first place. It's hard to find a decent photo on the interwebs but you'll do so if you google it.

And yeah, I saw one in person and either they'd taken the satin off with polishing or it never had it-- the pearl was still on there, see-through and drop-reflective as always but the satin is gone-- this is Toyota Bendigo's demonstrator, BTW.

PS; I should say "unedited Jap spec", there's shiny ones but they're usually from tuning companies who probably buffed them, too.

... what, like this one?

Satin means "semi-gloss", not gloss.

Here's a better one. Notice; Highlights chalky, lowlights glossy. Satin finish, in other words.

... mate, if cars are being buffed gloss they'll be gloss, whether they were satin clearcoat or not. Visiting a subaru dealer won't do anything, and I saw both BR-Z and 86 in Japan, IN THE FLESH, in satin finish!

Are you even reading what I'm saying?

Also; Yes, there's reflection in the paint! In the lowlights, the shadows, NOT the highlights!

(Edited, sorry, swore out of habit)

well if that is the case, no point posting up here. pretty much none of us has seen the car IN JAPAN. None of us can help you.

if your are that concerned, ask your dealer to have the car wrapped from Japan and not unwrap it until you take delivery.

this is the ONLY solution.

you know what, fresh off the production line, the production worker must have done something wrong!!

... you realise you just made me want the blue, right?

That said I do wonder if the satin needs to cure to come up right or something-- anywhere else, you'll see there's highlights where it goes chalk, lowlights it's glossy. I'll go through the shots I took overseas myself and see what I can find.
