Hi SlowCarFast ...... allow me to cut in.

Engineer ........ PED ..??

YIKES! How many different kinds of engineers are there..... ??

Back-in-the-day there were chemical engineers, electrical engineers, structural engineers and train engineers........ that was it.

Now it seems most people are engineers or IT specialists ....... isn't anybody on this forum ...... making anything .......

Am I a "granddaughter day care engineer" ...... ??

(sorry, I'm out of sorts, missed my nap - got conned into a squirt gun water fight with the two older granddaughters ........ damn these new fangled squirt guns shoot lots of water .....far ...... I got soaked ......)

Lol engineering is a very broad field with lots of niches. PED stands for product engineering and development. It's more or less the layer inbetween design and manufacturing. Ensuring that products are capable of being manufactured to the performance expected. Not all companies have a designated PED group. Many roll it up with design responsibilities and leave their manufacturing facilities at the mercy of design.

My degree is in mechanical engineering.

I think businesses like bragging that they have X number engineers on staff, so they tag the title to as many as they can. My title is"design engineer", but I don't have an engineering degree, nor a P.E. license.

Haha. Well, like the others said, there are plenty of engineers for different industries!

I know you like the older, more mechanical cars, but nowadays you need software engineers to write code for the ECU and all that kinda stuff, the dashboard gauges, etc.

That's just the cars, too. My friend is a software engineer who works on traffic systems, so like traffic light grids, etc.

Reminds me of back-in-the-day (here we go again ..) we were having a meeting of our field research & development group.

Myself and my three counterparts, were called field station superintendents.

We wanted our titles to be changed to field station managers. So, we met with the director of research and put forth our request. He leaned back in his chair and said "I have been with this company for 25 years and I still have the same title".

(well, ya, he was a department chairman at the University of California , Riverside, when he was hired by the president of our company to start up a pesticide research division. He started by hiring people and built that research organization that synthesized and developed chemical compounds that were brought to market and made the company the third largest manufacture of pesticides in the US.)

We thought we were dead. Then he picked up the phone and called HR and told him to change out titles to "managers".

He said, OK, now all of you are managers ...you're not going to make any more money ... but you are managers .......

sorry ------
