1500 is about the minimum you need to start. OK to give it a bit more.

The hardest part about driving MT is getting over the fear of driving MT. A day will come when you realize you just drove someplace without even thinking about the shifts.

I have some clicking noise under the hood from both sides and I barely have 180 miles on it, noticed this while driving on freeway. What could be that noise?
As far as the drivers behind you go, just turn it into a joke. Try to have the mentality of “well, why’re you getting so pissed at me stalling when it’s just going to delay you an extra minute?” Because really if you stall or get into first a bit slow it’s not like you’re stopping someone for two hours lol. So just get into the mindset that despite their annoyance it’s not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

Funniest time this happened to me an old guy in a Mercedes was behind me at a left turn lane. So the light changes to green and I stall. Suddenly the guys honking at me, arms raised in the air like I’m doing this on purpose. Light turns red before I can go so we have to wait for the next green. Meanwhile the guy is struggling because I guess he lost or forgot to take his chill pills. Finally the light turns green again, I make the turn, and then get into the next lane and he speeds up to pass me. As he passes he looks at me and I decide to grin! Because at that moment I realized if some asshole is too stupid to see you’ve stalled (as in your car just died) and is too impatient to give you a chance then that’s on them.

For all the people who did that to me when I used to stall, there would be plenty more who would be patient and not bother me when I’d stall and then get going again quickly.

Also @Tcoat has the best advice. Feel free to bother him with questions about MT.

Everyone stalls when they're learning. Everyone has an impatient/annoyed person while they stall at some point.

You can't control their reaction, so don't even try. If they wanna get angry, it could have been you, it could have been a bird pooping on their windshield, it could have been anything that set them off. You can control your own reaction, which should be a smile and a shrug like, "whoopsie, I'm still learning!".

As for driving, 1500 is a good starting point but depending on conditions you may need to give it more or less. It'll become second nature before you know it to just go by sound and feel alone. If I'm not doing anything stupid I don't even look at my tach.

This forum is awesome, I have been driving automatic for over 25 years (Honda Pilot SUV 15 years) and this small car is fun to drive. Thank you guys for offering support and courage. I am not a pro like you guys, but I will try to achieve that goal within a month. I have been driving 70-80 miles on freeway and this sweet car barely touches 3,000 RPM with 40-50 MPG economy.

Question - some cars have gear indicators on dash, why this car doesn't have? I know it's useless later on, just wondering.

In the settings display look for the GSI option and turn it on, it will display current gear (and an arrow at recommended up shift which I find to be useless as it doesn't seem to care how you're driving).

There is a gear display. Need to look in the manual to turn it on.
Only shows the gear *after* you let the clutch out, so not much real use.

It does have a gear indicator but it is off by default and you have to turn it on. Don’t remember how but it is in your owner manual. Like Dr Butt said don’t pay to much attention to what the Roma are but learn by sound and feel. When I teach people in person I actually tape over the tach so they are not trying to drive by numbers. The last thing somebody learning to drive MT needs to be doing is starring at a guage on the dash.

I took to long answering on the phone and now my repeat of the indicator looks silly after everybody else said it!

The arrow is set for milage so only gives you the most conservative shift points. I played with it for a day and turned it off. It was like playing Guitar Hero so I called it Shift Hero.

Somehow I think you've made this exact post before, but I'm too lazy to go and find it.

This. Even though I'm still learning (I've got all of 400 MT miles under my belt) I've come to the conclusion that it is mostly useless for me. I turned it off after a day or two and am just paying more attention to how the car feels and sounds. Sometimes my shifts are like butter, sometimes they aren't. I'm getting better though, lol.

At least once. Possibly as many as 20 times.

I have been driving MT for 45 years and have a couple of million miles under my belt. I have driven 3 speed column shifted cars, 20 speed split axle non synchronized trucks, drag racing trannys with hair trigger clutches and just about any other MT you can name.
I also can still honestly say that sometimes my shifts are like butter, sometimes they aren't. I'm getting better though!
