I wanted to try to play by the rules so I could compete in an organized event series.
Why pay for an scca membership and pay 20 bucks more per event to be out there for fun. I can go run for fun for 30 bucks a weekend instead of 60.
I would rather loose in a run what you brung series than make my car less fun to fit in.
Besides you guys just spent two days telling me I can't compete in scca because I don't have the talent or money.

To be competitive, cars need to be built to the rules. To have a car you can enjoy, that is a different story. We have done both as consultants, as sponsors, and for ourselves. What are your absolute goals? Every car we have setup is different and unique simply due to one fact: the drivers are different.

No. Big difference between talent and experience. No one is telling you that you don't have talent; just that it's highly unlikely you are driving well enough for it to matter what class you're in right now.

We assessed that you don't have the experience to be competitive in the immediate future, you may have the talent and the experience can be developed with patience and the right attitude.

You're the one who said you didn't want to spend tens of thousands of dollars more than you already have on your car.

If someone handed you a sponsorship check (or you decided to spend the money yourself) to go build the best SM car you could and you drove the pants off it you could show up to Nationals and take home the top prize. It's entirely possible. Probable? Unlikely. And at the end of the day that doesn't sound like something you want to do even if you were handed the cash.

I really do hope you find a way to have fun with your car.

I wish I had that kind of cash to drop in one lump on a build. I just don't think if I did I would want be autocross in with it. I just have a hard time trying justify building a race car and not going racing.
Sorry if that pisses off all you autox guys but I grew up actually racing, so autox will never be actual racing to me.

Our specialty isn't autocross, but we have consulted for several clients who are at the top of their class.

On the side note, it's fun taking a perfectly stock BRZ/FRS with race compound brake pads and proper DOT 4 fluid around a road course while beating out quite a few heavily modded cars.

At what point does driving the car you have to a place barely within its limits (and occasionally over) cease to be fun? Or cease to be racing?

You're welcome to set your own rules for yourself, but recognize it's not the rules of the club or class that you're upset over.

I've had more fun this year with the club where I'm fighting to run with the slow side of the consistent and hardcore competitive guys (tail end of trophies) than the club I happen to be leading in points for the year. Both SCCA.

I hope you find a path that you enjoy.

So did I.

I miss wheel to wheel action but calling autocross 'not actual racing' is foolish.

SM doesn't only stand for Street Modified, it also stands for $pend Money.

There is quite a bit of skill to not hitting cones on a course that you've never driven before. I know the cones don't move, but ideally you've never driven the same autocross course twice. If you can go out on a new course and in 3-4 runs throw down a win in your class, I'd say that involves more skill than winning on a road course that you've had a lot of time to practice on before. I've never road raced, so YMMV.

OP mentions legends cars, I believe he grew up circle track racing.

I could write a few paragraphs, but to keep it simple, the track changes, your competitors are always moving, I've gotten off track regretting changing my right front tire pressure by 0.5 psi or adding 1/16" of tilt, I've pushed the car in front of me across the start line to get a freight train going, there's nothing like it and I wouldn't presume to make assumptions about any other kind of racing now that I've done some autocross and been on a big road course.
