Scion FR-S wins class at the 2016 SCCA RallyCross National Championship
Nine Victors and a Cloud of Dust at SCCA RallyCross National Championship
INDIANOLA, Iowa (October 2, 2016) – The Sports Car Club of America has crowned nine new national champions after this weekend’s 10th annual SCCA RallyCross National Championship held September 30-October 2 at the National Balloon Classic field in Indianola, Iowa. The final event of the 2016 SCCA RallyCross season, this was the second straight year the championship was conducted at the venue just south of Des Moines. One by one, more than 100 fierce warriors were on hand to fight it out across nine competition classes that navigated their way through a ribbon of rich, brown dirt hemmed in by lush green grass and glowing orange traffic cones. Racers began their trek to a title under cloudy, gray skies Saturday with moisture hanging in the air. Over the course of the day, drivers would have a go at two different courses, with four runs on each layout timed to 1/1000th of a second and missed “gates” resulting in a 10-second penalty. Then under mostly cloudy skies Sunday, all competitors got four runs on one final circuit to decide who would emerge victorious. ... Another tight battle was formed Saturday in Prepared Rear-Wheel Drive where Dan Hipwood in a Toyota MR2 had a scant .687-second lead on Eric Adams in second, driving a Scion FR-S, and Shawn Roberts’ Mazda Miata sitting third. Hipwood wasn’t able to hold on and Adams’ performance Sunday netted him a .721-second win and the national RallyCross championship. Hipwood brought it home in second with Roberts maintaining third. ... Except for the front strut brace and the camber plates set to their most negative angle, STOCK! I've got thoughts to change to the stiffer BRZ front springs to tame the turn in down some... And I may do that if and when the struts give up the ghost, but the car works very well in the dirt with very little modifications.
There's more than one EVO with multiple RallyCross National titles that are also on stock suspension.

I've been wanting to take my car to a rallycross, in the spring actually since I already do plenty on frozen lakes during the winter, but the nearest course to me is built partly on a motocross track and I've been told it'd be pretty risky at the stock ride height. I may just need to drive a bit further to somewhere that's running an event on flatter ground. Btw, congrats on the win!

I don't bottom out very often, especially considering I race monthly, and the factory skid plate does a very god job. Fun fact: The 2010 Madaspeed3 has less factory ground clearance than our cars, and it doesn't have a skid plate! I RallyCrossed one of those too, I had to put a plate on it. It took more shots from debris than my FR-S has.

A buddy of mine, who also rallies an E36, rallycrosses his FR-S up in the Detroit region. May just have to go join him one of these days. I think it'd be a shorter trip than driving to any of the Iowa or Kansas events.

Btw, can you share some pics of the wheel fitment?
I've considered a set of 15" wheels for ice racing, thinking of doing a studded set, but most 15" wheel fitments I've seen threads on have had rubbing issues on other suspension components.

First off, awesome! I don't know how you put pants on with those balls
Second, how are the tracks over there in Iowa? The closest events here in NorCal get very rutted since the tracks need to be constantly watered to keep dust down (venue imposed). One event is actually in an OHV park, so that already starts off very rough. I've done a handful of rallycross events on my old beater (a 92 plymouth sundance) and my previous car (05 WRX wagon) and both have gotten their share of smashed oil pans, front bumpers, ripped out fender liners and mud up where the sun don't shine. Funny enough, our top driver this season is also in an MR2. Either way, kudos! Would love to see some vids and hope you keep it up. |

The Iowa site holds up very well. Especially considering that this year it saw 100+ drivers make 4 runs over three different courses over 1.5 days. The area is all great farm land and the soil so moist it is a bit spongy. Its nothing like the home event sites here in Colorado. Here everything is dry and hard-packed with a silty top layer, or covered in gravel. I've shucked a total of three fender liners out of five cars in my eight full seasons of competition locally. Two of those lost liners came out of the FR-S, the other from an MS3. All of them also occurred at the same site, which has two course areas, and the same area course claimed them all. If that makes sense. The MR2s do really well. I've only seen the 1st gens used in the dirt, but they seem pretty perfectly suited to RX duty.
