I refer to this stuff as white gold. It's really nice stuff, just a pain to clean if you get it on car windows (I put just a dab along the window-track, keeps all operating surfaces happy). Works great on slider doors around the house too.

So I tried using some white lithium grease on the shaft as shown in the video. I noticed the shaft was very dry and it seemed like any grease that might have been there has been long gone.
I applied the grease, pressed in the clutch fully a few times to help spread more inside the rubber part, and let it sit overnight and tried driving this morning. I didn't notice any honking noise for 80% of the trip and was starting to think it worked. I tried different levels of aggressiveness with shifts, let the clutch slip a few times, and no noise. Then I tried downshifting from 3rd to 2nd moderately aggressively and got a nice honk sound. Problem not solved @Tcoat |

OK step two. Clutch fork. A little more difficult but still not horrid. https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99578

(not an fr-s I know, but the assembly is close enough) So if I don't need to drop the transmission, where would I need to grease up? I've already greased the shaft that connects to the fork. I can't think of where else I could add grease to that's reachable. Maybe only around the fork where the rubber is? I don't see how that could make the honking noise... You have to get up inside the car and grease up the master cylinder rod. Top of picture.

I've heard a "honk" once in a while if I apply too much throttle with the clutch partially disengaged.
I always associated that with the pilot bearing fluttering a bit and try not to do that. Get the clutch engaged fully before romping on it is my solution. May be totally unhinged speculation. No promises. edit: listened to the harmonica tune on the first page. My noise was a couple octaves lower frequency than on the YouTube clip

The one pictured is for the brake cylinder rod but I'm looking for the clutch one, correct? Should look similar from the inside I think. I'll tackle that at the same time.

OOPS. I haven't been able to find a good picture of the clutch one. It is up in there.

I also greased up the cylinder inside the footwell as best I could. Wasn't too hard to find the right one by pushing the clutch pedal in. Took a drive this morning, and didn't hear any issues. Since this is an intermittent thing I'm not fully convinced it's good, so I'll continue to monitor it. |

After a week of more driving... Haven't heard the honking once.
Thank you for all the help @Tcoat . I guess it just needed some grease! Not sure if I can pinpoint exactly where of the three places I greased up really fixed it, but it seems to have solved the issue! So thankful I don't need to take to the dealership where they'd drop the transmission, spend a lot of time investigating, and cost me a lot of money. |
